A large-scale Medicare analysis is reshaping how clinicians and policymakers think about wound care product performance.

First-to-Podium research titled "Rethinking Regulatory Tiers: Medicare Real-World Evidence Shows Cellular, Acellular, and Matrix-Like Product (CAMP) Outcomes are Independent of FDA Regulatory Classification," presented today by William H. Tettelbach, MD, FACP, FIDSA, FUHM, MAPWCA, CWSP, at SAWC Spring | WHS, reveals that regulatory labels are not reliable indicators of real-world effectiveness.

- Evaluated over 3 million cases using longitudinal Medicare data
- Found no correlation between FDA classification and healing outcomes
- CAMP therapies consistently reduced mortality compared to standard care
- Demonstrated fewer amputations and lower complication rates
- Findings challenge reimbursement models based on regulatory tiering

A non-mammalian collagen source is emerging as a serious contender in advanced wound care.

In "Collagen Derived from the Barrel Jellyfish Demonstrates Efficacy as Next Generation Biomaterial for Wound Healing," Andrew Mearns Spragg, PhD, shared First-to-Podium data at SAWC Spring | WHS (underway now in Charlotte, NC), demonstrating how collagen type 0 (CT0) supports improved healing outcomes.

- Delivered regenerative outcomes that exceeded bovine collagen in preclinical evaluation
- Achieved significantly higher wound closure than film dressing controls
- Promoted re-epithelialization with a lower inflammatory profile
- Supported more complete granulation during the healing process
- Provides a biocompatible alternative without zoonotic disease risk

Clinicians now have stronger evidence to guide therapy selection in complex diabetic foot ulcers.

In "New Randomized Controlled Trial Finds Equivalent Efficacy Between Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) for Skin Graft Uptake in Diabetic Foot Ulcers," Debarati Chattopadhyay, MS, MCh, today presented First-to-Podium findings at SAWCSpring | WHS, demonstrating comparable outcomes between both approaches.

- Equivalent graft uptake at early and later postoperative timepoints
- Nearly identical rates of graft failure and partial loss
- No significant differences in safety or microbiological outcomes
- Level I evidence supporting both therapies in complex wound reconstruction
- Supports individualized therapy selection based on patient needs and resource availability
