5/13: Covid19 update/office opening date: To be determined.
With over 80,000 US deaths and over 26,000 of those fatalities in New York, for your protection we decided to continue to keep the office closed until people are told to return to work in New York City as many of our patients work in the city. Remember that New Rochelle was designated the first containment zone in the United States as the coronavirus outbreak started around us.
I’ll continue to take care of all of my patients using telemedicine, for your safety. Stay at home orders are still in place and the last place you want to be right now is at a healthcare facility.
So right now we’re shooting for Monday June 1 for the opening of the office. If that changes I’ll let you know. Please all stay safe and hang in there during this stressful time.
The future safety of all depends upon testing and the availability of testing, which is lacking presently. Testing for COVID-19 still requires a note from me for most people. If you feel you should be tested or want to be tested simply email DoctorKevinmaloney@gmail.com. Make sure you spell out the word doctor and include your phone number please.
As of now, antibody testing is not reliable. For those of you who have tested positive to antibodies do not be lulled into a false sense of security. We do not know how long immunity lasts or if there is immunity at all. As you may have heard the first man to have contacted this illness in Wuhan China has been re-hospitalized with COVID-19 a second time just this week.
For all of my patients you can reach me using telemedicine if you feel you need medication because of an illness or if you need to refill medication etc..
In the meantime please be safe and never doubt that this is a very serious dangerous virus unlike any other we have seen before in our lifetimes. We all remember how dangerous the Ebola virus epidemic was which caused approximately 12,000 deaths worldwide over the course of two years. As of today almost 300,000 people have died worldwide in just 5 months or so.
Over 80,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the last few months in the United States, with New York having the most ; almost one third of all deaths being in New York. It’s expected that well over 100 thousand more people will die in the US over the next couple of months from this coronavirus even with social distancing and stay at home orders in place (the possibility of 10,000 more deaths in New York by August).
So please stay at home whenever possible and when you do have to go out follow all recommendations regarding social distancing, wearing a mask, hand washing etc.. Do not let your guard down whatsoever. This virus is a killer and regardless of what you hear on television we know very little if anything about it at all as data is being collected
to hopefully develop a vaccine. The earliest projections for a vaccine to be in place is for the late fall. So get used to this as it is the new normal for all of us. In the meantime the most important advice that I can give to you is that if you become ill with what in the past you might have thought of as a common virus such as upper respiratory (cough, congestion, sore throat),
Gastrointestinal (diarrhea, vomiting), in addition to more overt symptoms associated with covid19 such as shortness of breath,
Fatigue, chest pain, congestion with loss of smell sensation, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately and not wait, like we all might have in the past, assuming that we had come down with a common virus that would resolve on its own. We should take no chances about becoming ill presently and over the next several months until a vaccine is developed for this killer. Again, do not hesitate to contact your healthcare provider. Take no chances. Those who I have seen developing serious consequences such as pneumonia from COVID-19 , for the most part have not followed recommendations or who have delayed seeking medical treatment.
I have to complement so many of you who I have spoken to and communicated with through telemedicine over the last months for the fact that you are all taking this very seriously for your protection and protection of all others and I trust that you will continue to do the same throughout the warm months that are upon us as we begin to spend more time outdoors.
There are still those who think this is overkill and you will come across them not practicing guidelines and you might feel that they are putting you and others at risk but don’t be tempted to confront these people. Just walk away and worry about protecting yourselves. You do not want to incite others by confronting them during a time when tensions are high and people are more likely to overreact (there have been shootings and deaths caused by confronting others in such situations, so learn to swallow it if you come across such individuals). There are those of you who are reading this who might perhaps think that I am overreacting. All I can tell you is that if you had a family member, who died from COVID 19 and who had no medical problems you would think differently and would want to take every possible recommended precaution. At the same time we must realize that each and every one of us is in a different position: there are those fighting for restrictions to be lifted for them to be able to go back to work to be able to support their families, pay their rent, put food on their tables, feed their children and therefore may have to put themselves at risk. Try not to judge them, but to diplomatically teach them that they can do this in a way to protect themselves their families and others by following the recommended guidelines with regards to social distancing when possible wearing masks etc. I would recommend that if you go out, and are able to bring with you and extra mask that when you come across one of these people you toss to them the extra mask you brought with you, understanding that perhaps they cannot afford to even purchase a mask due to hardship and they may not have thought of using a facial covering. As tensions continue to rise the last thing we need to do is to confront others as restrictions lift and you will be tempted to believe me, but don’t. We do not need to see more demonstrations more violence etc. as we are dealing with the deaths of
thousands of people throughout the world still on a daily basis.
A zoom meeting will be scheduled for next Wednesday evening, Time to be determined.
Be safe everyone.
