James “Jim” Adams currently walks the grounds of a local garden and greenhouse, monitoring plantings and operating equipment with confidence. This once felt like an impossibility an after his left total knee replacement.

At the beginning of the year, Jim decided to undergo surgery in the hopes he could get back to moving better and simply participating in life. After replacement he began his physical therapy journey at home with the team at NovaCare Rehabilitation. Physical Therapists Ashley Miller and Alea Krouse touched base with him to begin the process and worked on both safety and functional transfers kicking off his recuperation. After a couple of visits in-home, Jim transitioned smoothly to the center.

The Williamstown center became the setting for rebuilding range of motion, strength, balance and flexibility. Jim’s progress came in small gains accumulated through strong, consistent effort. His ability to perform squats, climb stairs and stand for long periods gradually returned.

The work paid off with Jim being discharged to an independent home exercise program. Jim, when faced with a challenge, pushed himself to success by tapping into the power of a physical therapy, ultimately giving him back his independence.

Pitch counts, pitch clocks and mandated rest days. All things aimed at helping pitchers to minimize injury.

Do these things help? Physical Therapist John Ebinger explains how pitch counts do not equal workload and what parents, coaches and other health care providers should look for when it comes to baseball and softball pitchers and injury prevention.

“I’m a retired school teacher who substitutes in an old, three-story building,” Christine Caton explained. “Standing all day and climbing stairs became nearly impossible prior to surgery.”

In 2024, Christine tore her lateral meniscus root in right knee. As if on repeat, she tore the same thing in her left knee in 2025. Both times she required physical therapy. By the second time, she knew what to expect when recovering from the injury. Her positive experience with the team brought her back determined to reclaim her active lifestyle due to her previous excellent care.

At first, the thought of walking, gardening, climbing stairs or simply standing felt overwhelming. However, her physical therapists worked collaboratively to write and implement a treatment program built exclusively for her. With their support, Christine gave her all in therapy. Each physical therapy milestone achieved was a victory and put her one step closer to teaching and doing all the other things she loved.

While Christine has made tremendous progress, her physical therapy journey hasn’t ended yet. But returning to 100% is in sight. Steps at school are no longer intimidating. She is already back walking and gardening. As she improves every day and every visit, she looks forward to her well-deserved vacation in Florida.

Not all trainers are the same. Help us clear up some confusion.

Athletic trainers are licensed health care professionals with advanced education, who help prevent and treat injuries.

Personal trainers play an important role in fitness and performance, but they don't diagnose or treat injuries.

This National Athletic Training Month, help us educate and advocate for athlete safety, and tell the story of the professionals protecting athletes at every level.

When he was 6 in 2018, Raibron Manuel began speech therapy to become more confident in his communication skills. Since then, Raibron's mom, Marlene, has seen significant growth in her son's willingness to engage and communicate with others.

"He is working on building longer, more complete sentences and continues to grow in sharing his thoughts and ideas," Marlene said.

Raibron's vibrant personality is on display during his speech therapy sessions. He loves to role-play, which is one way to practice conversations.

"Raibron's therapy was not about reaching age-appropriate performance or meeting milestones," Speech-Language Pathologist Marissa Copley shared. "He didn't find those things meaningful."

So, Marissa changed her approach to therapy with Raibron. She met him where he was and worked on his confidence. They addressed clear-speech strategies, practiced conversations with other therapists and kids in the center and used a high-tech, speech-generating device as needed.

Raibron has been discharged and is maximizing his potential, but his family knows he can always return if he needs more assistance!

We are proud he boosted his skills while improving his self-esteem and confidence, too.

The NovaCare team from Wissahickon Avenue partnered with the Salvation Army Kroc Center for an incredible open house event focused on mobility, safety and healthy aging.

Skilled clinicians provided balance screenings and functional balance assessments to members throughout the day. These screenings helped participants better understand their fall risk, learn strategies to improve stability and take proactive steps toward safer movement in everyday life.

Thank you to the Kroc Center team for welcoming us and to all the community members who stopped by, asked questions and took part in the assessments. Your commitment to your health inspires us!
