I am so pleased that this book is the first my kiddo will read in her AP English class. I am hoping this was a timely and intentional choice by her teacher. This is a very deep and emotional read- read it anyway. It will disturb you - it should, let it.

When a dear friend surprises you with a gift and says, “ I saw it and it made me think of you. I felt like it sort of summarized your year.” And it is the most perfect thing. I love it so much and the thought and understanding behind it is moving to me.

Food is the one thing that meets a basic need, crosses cultures and language barriers and diffuses tension. Even with little, cultures across history have made it good. Good tools, good ingredients make even the simplest of fare seem rich and extravagant. Good food is something I always return to when everything else around me seems to be going mad. At least I can still do this and share it. Meet a need for someone, create acceptance through seating them at my table. We still have this if we having nothing else.

Seminar done. I took myself on a walking tour of historical sites from the height of the jazz era in Harlem. Strivers Row, Abyssinian church, Harlem walk of Fame… I ate the best corn bread and fried chicken ever at Sylvia’s. I sat in front of paintings made by Gustav Klimt for an hour. I learned firsthand (again) why people that live in the city, walk it, ride the train everywhere, etc shower multiple times per day. You schedule it in to stop at home and have a quick shower. lol I love this city more each time I come. Except for the price. My bank account hates me.

I learn more every time. Things I thought I knew are clarified and I learn another layer or two. I love knowing that I know how to help people. I only know what I know the same way any of bus do. Brilliant thinkers studied and wrote down their thoughts. And more brilliant thinkers came after and shared theirs. Let’s keep that going.
