In assisted living and long-term care residences, nurses provide much more than clinical care.

Nursing is relationship-building. Advocacy. Patience. Comfort. Communication. Dignity. It is about seeing the whole person, not just a diagnosis.

Our nurses support residents through vulnerable moments, help families feel informed and reassured, and work alongside their teams to create a caring, respectful, and home-like environment.

To our nurses: thank you for the compassion you bring, the dignity you protect, the knowledge you share, and the difference you make every day.

We are grateful to you during National Nurses Week and always. Join us as we celebrate our nurses by leaving a note of appreciation below.

For older adults, emotional well-being can be linked to daily routines, social connections, physical health, family involvement, and a sense of safety, value, and support.

At Birmingham Green, resident support is interdisciplinary and person-centered. That means our team works together to observe changes in mood or behavior, support meaningful routines, encourage engagement, and communicate concerns when additional care may be needed.

At Birmingham Green, we have always believed volunteers are more than extra support. They are part of the solution. We are honored to see that our work is recognized in this feature. Read the article, and come volunteer with us.

The caregiving workforce is struggling to keep pace with the increasing demand for services as the older adult population gets larger. One senior living community said it is turning to volunteers as a “solution hiding in plain sight.”

At Birmingham Green, giving back doesn't stop with age.

Our residents actively participate in food deliveries to a supportive shelter in Woodbridge, providing meals and words of encouragement to individuals facing temporary housing challenges.

Their participation reflects an important truth: service, compassion, and purpose continue at every stage of life.

If your organization is looking for a meaningful way to make an impact in our community, we'd love to connect. Birmingham Green is always looking for local partners who are as community-focused as we are. Learn more at birminghamgreen.org

What keeps someone at the same job for seven years? For Cheryl Iler, it has always come down to community and impact.

It's the resident who goes home to their family. The one who gains enough independence to enjoy their life a little more fully. The person who stops her in the hallway just to share a laugh.

Cheryl came to Birmingham Green because a friend told her about an opening. She stayed because the work means something. Seven years of relationships, milestones, and moments that remind her exactly why she chose this field.

Happy Occupational Therapy Month, Cheryl. We are so glad you answered that call.

As the senior population grows, the need for a strong healthcare workforce continues to rise. That need goes beyond nurses and clinical staff.

It also includes the people who support daily life, comfort, operations, and community.

We’re growing too, and looking for people who don’t just want a job in healthcare, but a place where their work genuinely matters.

Occupational Therapy Month means something personal here.

For Shabana Rauf, it started with her grandparents. Watching them be cared for with patience and dignity planted something in her that never left. Years later, a short visit to Birmingham Green turned into a career she never wanted to leave.

She helps our residents rebuild independence, one small victory at a time. And we are lucky to have her.

For the past eight years, Lyric's Garden Club has helped grow more than vegetables at Birmingham Green.

With support from residents, staff, and volunteers, the on-campus garden produces fresh seasonal vegetables that support resident programming through the Life Enrichment team.

Last year, the club also shared produce with a supportive shelter in Woodbridge, expanding its impact beyond our campus and supporting Birmingham Green’s weekly meal outreach that has been in place since 2023.
