Thanks to Medical Reserve Corps volunteers from four of our Virginia MRC units for partnering to protect our communities’ health during this year’s celebration. Stay safe out there!

If you must venture out, be VERY cautious in the icy conditions: wear sturdy, nonslip shoes, take short, shuffling steps, keep your balance, avoid distractions, use handrails when available, stay alert for black ice & remember to "walk like a penguin"! 🐧

Our Story

The Greater Prince William MRC unit was established in 2006, and is one of 27 MRC units in Virginia. There are approximately 1,000 MRC units nationwide. Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers include medical and public health professionals, such as physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, dentists, and veterinarians. Many non-medical community members also support the MRC, such as interpreters, chaplains, administrative staff, students, and many others.

The need for the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) became apparent after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when thousands of medical and public health professionals, eager to volunteer in support of emergency relief activities, found that there was no organized approach to channel their efforts. Local responders were already overwhelmed and did not have a way to identify and manage these spontaneous volunteers, and many highly skilled people were turned away. As a result, the MRC was established in 2002 to provide a way to recruit, train, and activate volunteers to respond to community health needs, including disasters and other public health emergencies.
