👻 Have a happy and safe Halloween! 🎃

Halloween should be scary for the right reasons: haunted houses, spooky movie nights, and cool costumes. Keep a day full of sweet treats from going sour. It’s important to stay alert and be safe both as a driver and pedestrian this Halloween. Check out these tips:

For Drivers:
🛣️ Be especially alert and take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.

🏘️ Slow down in residential neighborhoods. Remember that popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

📵 Reduce any distractions inside your car, such as talking on the phone or eating, so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

For Pedestrians:

🔦 Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.

📵 Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.

🚗 Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars and be especially careful around driveways and alleys.

🚸 Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, tell them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit, stay on sidewalks if available, and trick-or-treat in groups.

“Influencers” make me afraid for this generation. Teaching our children how to evaluate information sources is imperative! How many followers a person has does not confer proof of knowledge. Ask your teenager why they think their source is reliable? We may not have all the answers, but helping our teens be thoughtful about whose advice they take will help them make good decisions.

With Halloween next week- here are great safety tips for kids with food allergies!

🎃 Tips for keeping Halloween fun and safe for kids with food allergies! 👻

Halloween should be full of fun frights, not food fights with allergens. But for children with food allergies, even a small bite of the wrong treat can cause a serious reaction. Here’s how to keep the night both festive and safe:

🕵️‍♀️ Read before they eat
Always check ingredient labels before your child enjoys a treat. Many candies contain common allergens like peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, soy, or wheat. Be aware that “fun-size” or mini versions can have different ingredients from full-size candies.

✨ Swap smartly
If a label isn’t available, trade those mystery treats for safe alternatives. Try a “Treat Fairy” or “Switch Witch” swap, kids leave their unsafe candy and wake up to a fun prize!

💡 Share the safety plan
Let teachers, friends, and other adults know about your child’s allergies and what to do in an emergency. Always carry two doses of epinephrine and make sure everyone knows the signs of an allergic reaction, like shortness of breath, swelling, or dizziness.

🎨 Focus on food-free fun
Support the Teal Pumpkin Project by offering non-food treats, like glow sticks, stickers, bubbles, or small toys, so every child can safely join in.

Whether you’re trick-or-treating or hosting a spooky celebration, a little planning goes a long way to make sure your Halloween is all treats and no trips to the ER. 🧡
