It’s a “Feel Good Friday” when we receive this compliment from a proud father of one our UPMC Magee-Womens in Central Pa. breast surgeons.

In a submission to the Pennsylvania Medical Society for a National Doctor’s Day award, Dr. Geletzke’s father wrote, “…Now I have never even had an appointment with Dr. Geletzke, but I know how hard she works and how much she cares about her patients! I have watched her grow and mature since she was born. During my 45-year career as a railroader, I thought I worked an unbelievable number of hours...but watching my daughter go through her surgical residency gave me total respect for physicians in all specialties! Basically, all I can say is that I am so proud of my daughter and state she sure didn't get her brains from her father! If someone needed to see a breast surgeon, I wouldn't hesitate to send them to Dr. Abby Geletzke, MD!”

While National Doctor’s Day was earlier this year, Dr. Geletzke’s commitment and care for patients never stops. In Lancaster County, she sees patients with breast cancer, those with risk factors leading to a high risk of breast cancer, and patients with benign breast problems.

Congratulations to the four new graduates of the fifth cohort of UPMC in Central Pa.'s MA training program. In a ceremony where family, friends, and their leaders came to support them, the graduates received their certification pins and a certificate.

“This is a unique program in that you get paid for coming to school, and you graduate with a certification,” Gina Pupo, senior director of clinical operations for the medical group told the audience. “We know how difficult it is for students coming out of high school, or a single parent, or someone who just came to this country to pursue education to further their career. With the support of the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation, we are pleased to offer this to our community.”

The 16-week program culminates with students taking their Certified Clinical
In this paid training program, students undergo clinical rotations, didactic skills modules, cost-free MA certification exam and an externship placement at a UPMC in Central Pa. outpatient clinic. They are partnered with a mentor and provided with support in applying for and beginning a permanent position.

Applications for the next cohort have just opened on careers.UPMC.com (search “Medical Assistant Trainee”) with classes beginning on Monday, Oct. 27.

Why do a virtual visit for a child with asthma?

“With many asthma visits, it’s actually a perfect way to do a visit because it’s a clinical diagnosis and involves a lot of discussion,” answered pediatric pulmonologist and certified asthma educator, Heather Jahoda, PA-C, on a recent appearance on WHP’s Taking Care of Business.

Listen to Heather’s complete interview as she discusses pediatric asthma symptoms, treatments and virtual visits available through UPMC Children’s Specialty Services in Central Pa.

Lung cancer continues to be one of the deadliest cancers in the United States. To shed light on this topic, Dr. Troy Moritz, UPMC Thoracic Surgeon, joined The Spark podcast and shared his expertise on the disease, risk factors, the importance of screenings, and more.

Lung cancer is commonly referred to as a “silent killer” because it may not show symptoms in the early stages. However, when it comes to early detection, it’s important not to ignore subtle warning signs.

“Sometimes people think their airways are just irritated,” Dr. Moritz explained. “But if something doesn’t go away with normal treatment, it’s time to get checked out.”
