Wildfire smoke, such as what is currently coming over from Canada, can cause eye irritation. Short term exposure can lead to red, watery, stinging, burning, gritty, blurry eyes and possibly temporary vision changes. Smokey air can have more serious affects and even worsen conditions like dry eye, blepharitis, allergic conjunctivitis and keratitis. Stay indoors during periods of high smoke levels and use an air purifier to remove smoke particles. Keep your eyes hydrated with preservative free artificial tears, lubricating eye drops and cool water flush. Avoid rubbing your eyes as this can make symptoms worse. Wear eyeglasses or sunglasses when outdoors to protect your vision and consult your eye doctor if you experience eye pain, blurred vision or other concerning symptoms.
