🦨 Skunk Season Reminder!

With warmer weather arriving, skunks are becoming more active around our neighborhoods. Curious pets can sometimes get a little too close for comfort! 🦨

If your dog or cat gets sprayed:
• Keep them outside if possible
• Avoid getting the oils in their eyes or mouth
• Skip the tomato juice — it doesn’t work as well as people think

A mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap can help break down the odor.

If your pet gets sprayed in the eyes, seems lethargic, or ingests skunk spray, give us a call so we can help!

Interesting toxicity!

🚨 Unusual Toxicity Case Alert 🚨

Meet Popi, a 10yo Terrier mix who's curiosity got her in trouble. Popi made the mistake of consuming ~30 apricot kernels (+ charcoal tablets).

The Twist? This wasn't your typical ingestion case.

Within hours: seizures, severe lactic acidosis (lactate was 12!), persistent tachycardia, and neuro signs that didn't add up... until we connected the dots.

🔑 Apricot kernels = CYANIDE

After consulting with several ASPCA Poison Control Toxicologists & sourcing hydroxocobalamin from a human hospital, Popi went from critically seizing to bright & ravenous overnight.

Popi made a complete recovery & went home the next day. Thank you to our criticalists Dr. Kathryn Benavides and Dr. Mary D'Ambrosio for going above and beyond for our patients.💚

🚨 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE READ 🚨

We have been made aware of a scam phone call circulating in our community. Individuals are posing as representatives of our hospital (VECM), claiming that your pet has been traumatically injured and urgently needs emergency surgery. They demand immediate payment over the phone and insist that you must pay before you are allowed to see your pet.

⚠️ These calls often come from blocked or private numbers, and the contact information they provide is NOT ours.

Please know:
✅ VECM will never deny you access to your pet.
✅ We do not call and demand payment before allowing you to see or approve care for your animal.
✅ If you are ever unsure, hang up and call us directly at (603) 666-6677.

If you receive a call like this, do not provide any personal or financial information. Report it to your local authorities.

Your trust and your pet’s safety are our top priorities. Thank you for staying vigilant. 🐾
