How perfect is little miss Nala?! This sweet girl comes to see us for dry eye and keratitis, which is inflammation of her cornea. Both of these conditions are common in our bulldog friends. We were so happy to see that Nala was doing well at her most recent visit, and her medications are working well!

Staff pet(s) of the month! This month we are introducing you to the the pets belonging to our technician Maddy! 🐾

Meet Penny, Odin and Blub-Blub!

Penny is an 8 year old Aussie-Husky mix. She absolutely loves to go on walks, play fetch or swim any chance she can. She is mama's shadow, and a fierce protector of her little human sisters. She is not a fan of any salty snacks, but will steal anything savory or sweet.

Odin is a 4 year old Great Dane. He loves to play or swim hard and sleep harder. If you can't find him, he has most likely snuck off to mom & dad's bed to cuddle under the blankets. His favorite snack is peanut butter, although he's been known to counter surf and steal actual sticks of butter before 😂 He is a very patient gentle giant around his tiny humans, but beware his whip-like tail!!

Blub-blub is our handsome beta fish. He loves to swim around or rest on his live plant in his aquarium and he lives for dinner time!

Here at NEVO we do all that we can to keep our patients feeling as comfortable as possible during their stay with us.

This is Piggy! A sweet, 15 year old chihuahua who spent the day with us last week so she could have cataract surgery. She is used to being carried around in a pouch, so that is what we did! You can tell she was very comfortable while she waited her turn for surgery!

Happy Monday from this beauty, Aviva! 💕

She came in for a visit last week and had to show off her "sit pretty" trick! Don't worry, we made sure she got lots of treats for her hard work!

NEVO's May Pet of the Month is Yonkel! 💚🐾

Yonkel is a 14 year old (almost 15 year old) Dachshund! Yonkel started coming to see NEVO for glaucoma. What Yonkel loves most about coming to NEVO is all of the cuddles he gets from the NEVO team.

Yonkel's favorite toy is a blue ball that he loves! His favorite place to be is laying down next to his Mom or sun puddling if he can. His favorite activity is sniffing outside, followed by a nap.

Yonkel's favorite food/treat is cheese and sometimes meat shares if he can get them.
His idea of a perfect day is: he would love to start it with breakfast in bed, but his mom won’t allow that. His perfect day is spending the day outside walking around doing sniffs, then laying next to me on a blanket and being hand fed snacks and treats. It would probably also include personal space from his sister.

Yonkel's most naughty trait is that he unwraps his medication out of his pill pockets and sets the medicine off to the side. Sneaky boy!

We absolutely adore seeing Yonkel! 💛🐾

NEVO Staff Pet Introduction!

You've had a chance to learn about the staff of NEVO, but we would all love to share our pets with you! Over the next few weeks we will be introducing them one at a time!

This is Remy, and he belongs to our technician Rosie.

Rosie says: Remy is my sweet baby angel a.k.a. 8 lb. terrorist. Is a 3-year-old professional cuddler that doubles as a house alarm, bodyguard, and food thief. He loves to sleep under blankets and will relentlessly beg for food. His favorite snacks are popcorn, goldfish, and any cereal that dad is eating. Remy loves sunshine and summer. He is not a fan of snow or rain.

We love our little Remy boy! 💙🐾

Let's talk about a common type of diagnostic test we routinely perform here at NEVO called an ERG (electroretinogram). This is a simple, non-invasive test that we use to evaluate the health and function of the retina. While we are often able to evaluate the health of the retina with a simple examination, there are many cases where we need to evaluate the function of the retina, which requires an ERG. Think of an ERG as an ECG (electrocardiogram) of the eye.

We typically perform this test with the patient fully awake or mildly sedated. Two electrodes are placed on the head and a contact lens with a gold lining is placed on the eye after the cornea is numbed with a topical anesthetic drop. After the patient has been able to adapt to the dark (usually about 10 – 20 minutes) the device will flash light of a specified intensity. The electrodes will measure the electrical activity of the retina in response to the light stimulus. We are then able to analyze this response and determine whether the retina is working properly.

This is a test we routinely perform before any cataract surgery to ensure proper function of the retina. If the ERG is abnormal prior to surgery, this indicates that the patient may not see well even if the cataract is removed. This is designed to prevent us from performing surgery on patients with poor retinal function. The other reasons we perform this test is to diagnose retinal diseases that can cause blindness such as SARD (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration) or PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy). These conditions result in dysfunction of the retina and abnormal ERG waves.

Below are some pictures of our technicians performing an ERG, along with normal and abnormal test results!

K9 Kane of the Manchester NH Police Department came in last week for a swelling around his left eye. Dr. Alling was able to take a look and get him on the mend. Our suspicion is that he had a run in with a bee 🐝
