🎙️ Featured Speaker Spotlight: Pierre Gendreau–Hétu
📅 ACGS Fall Conference – September 27, 2025
💻 100% Virtual – Join us from anywhere!

We’re excited to welcome Pierre Gendreau–Hétu, associate researcher with the Université de Montréal’s PRDH and a leading voice in the study of hereditary surnames. Pierre’s work sits at the crossroads of linguistics, genealogy, and population history—where DNA data and archival records come together to reveal powerful truths about our shared past.

His research, deeply rooted in citizen science and collaborative data projects like the Généalogie Québec Project, is transforming how we understand kinship and migration across centuries and continents.

🧬 Presentation: To the Origins of a New France Pioneer: Grondin Surname Distribution and Genetic Correlation

In this groundbreaking talk, Pierre explores how new methods in surname analysis and Y-DNA testing helped solve a long-standing mystery in French colonial history. The case of Pierre Grondin (∼1649–1729), a New France pioneer with elusive origins, becomes a lens through which we see the power of hybrid methodologies—combining civil records, genomic evidence, and public participation.

You’ll discover how surname distribution and genetic correlation can uncover unknown points of departure, redefine kinship, and offer a new scale for observing colonial societies. This presentation is a must for anyone interested in deep ancestry, population history, or the evolving tools of genealogical research.

🌍 Whether you're tracing your own surname or fascinated by the broader patterns of migration and identity, Pierre’s insights will open new doors in your understanding of New France and its legacy.

🎙️ Featured Speaker Spotlight: Hugo Saint-Amant Lamy
📅 ACGS Fall Conference – September 27, 2025
💻 100% Virtual – Join us from anywhere!

We’re delighted to welcome Hugo Saint-Amant Lamy, professor of linguistics at Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR), to our speaker lineup this fall! Hugo’s research dives deep into the evolution of French in North America, with a special focus on linguistic variation in Quebec and Acadia. Using cutting-edge tools like corpus linguistics and dialectometry, he uncovers the subtle shifts that have shaped how communities speak—and name—themselves.

🔤 Presentation: The Birth of Names – Shifts in Naming Culture in 18th and 19th-Century Quebec

What’s in a name? As it turns out—quite a lot! Hugo’s presentation explores a fascinating transformation in Quebec’s naming traditions, beginning in the late 1700s. For generations, names like Marie, Pierre, and Jacques reigned supreme. But by the 19th century, hyphenated names and a wave of new, saint-inspired choices began to flourish.

Through genealogical records, Hugo traces how these naming trends spread across regions, revealing surprising contrasts between innovative hubs like Montreal and Charlevoix, and more traditional areas like Quebec City. You’ll discover how naming practices reflect deeper cultural forces—and how they help us understand the identities of individuals, families, and entire communities.

✨ Whether you’re a genealogist, historian, or simply curious about the stories
behind the names in your family tree, this talk will offer fresh insights and spark new questions.

🎙️ Featured Speaker Spotlight: Luc V. Baronian
📅 ACGS Fall Conference – September 27, 2025
💻 100% Virtual – Join from anywhere!

We’re thrilled to welcome Luc V. Baronian, Associate Professor of Linguistics at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, to our virtual stage this fall! With a PhD from Stanford and a deep passion for the spoken dialects of North American French communities, Luc brings a unique blend of linguistic insight and genealogical expertise to the world of French-Canadian and Acadian research.

His work dives into the evolution of family names, migration patterns, and the power of DNA testing to uncover hidden truths in our family trees. Luc is also a co-administrator of the Généalogie Québec Project, collaborating closely with the PRDH at UMontréal.

🔬 Presentation: The Matrilineal Progeny of Jeanne Soldé: An example of mtDNA validation of deep genealogies

Luc will take us on a journey through time using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to validate deep genealogies—specifically tracing the maternal line of Montréal settler Jeanne Soldé. With over 227 great-grandchildren and descendants who migrated more than 1,000 miles into the American Midwest, Jeanne’s story is a powerful example of how mtDNA can illuminate forgotten connections, clarify ancestral origins, and even reveal maternal relatives missing from the paper trail.
Whether you're a seasoned researcher or just beginning your genealogical journey, this talk will inspire new ways to think about your family’s past—and how science and history can work hand in hand.

👉 Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of the leading voices in linguistic genealogy.
