How to Support a Child Who Stutters
For some children who stutter, speaking can be an immense struggle filled with anxiety and frustration. As parents, teachers, and loved ones, the way we interact with them can make a huge difference in helping them develop positive attitudes about communication and talking. Here are some tips:
DO:
β
Listen patiently without interrupting
β
Make eye contact and give your full attention
β
Ask open-ended questions to reduce pressure
β
Model slow, relaxed speech yourself
β
Focus on what the child is saying, not how they're saying it
DON'T:
β Finish the child's words or sentences for them
β Instruct them to "slow down," "take a breath," or "relax"
β Call extra attention to their stuttering
β Show signs of impatience or frustration
β Make hurtful comments or jokes about their stuttering
The key is creating a supportive environment where the child feels comfortable speaking at their own pace without fear or judgment.
