Dorlene Kaelberer

Dorlene Christina Kaelberer, 98, of New Salem, North Dakota, passed away at her home on 18 August 2025. She was born on the family farm on 3 April 1927 to Edward and Frieda Albrecht.

Dorlene was a beautiful woman who will be greatly missed. She navigated a world of immense change over the last 98 years. After growing up (and working) on a farm during the Depression, she overcame a serious illness and graduated from New Salem High School during World War II. She then spent several years working at the Quain and Ramsted Clinic in Bismarck before marrying Raymond Kaelberer on 3 September 1947. She moved to their farm south of New Salem and was a farm wife for the next 46 years and mother to four children. Dorlene was a long-time member of Bethel Church, singing in the choir and serving in all areas of church life. Beyond all the daily duties of a farm wife, her hobbies included crocheting, reading, playing cards, music, and completing thousands of crossword puzzles. One of her claims to fame is her homemade buns, of which it is estimated she made tens of thousands over the years. Up until her final days, she still regularly video conferenced with her children living in Minnesota, Maryland, California, and Florida.

She is survived by her son Ronald Kaelberer and wife Jaya, daughter Vicki Nagel, son Kevin Kaelberer and wife BJ Vinson, son Monte Kaelberer and wife Debra, and grandchildren Julie Kaelberer, Maya Kaelberer, Michele West, Douglas Nagel, Derek Kaelberer, and Devon Kaelberer.

Dorlene was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Frieda Albrecht, husband Raymond Kaelberer, sister Dorothy Neas, grandson Kori Kaelberer, and great-grandson Alex West.

A celebration of Dorlene’s life will be held in the Chapel at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem, North Dakota, at 2:30 pm on 23 August 2025. The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm until the time of the service. Memorials received will be donated to Elm Crest Manor.

Richard Renner

Richard Renner, 80, of Mandan, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on August 18, 2025.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, August 22, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home in Mandan with Rev. Adam Barden presiding. Burial will follow at Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Thursday, August 21, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the funeral on Friday.

Richard was born March 25, 1945, in Mandan, the first of three beloved children to Valentine and Bertha Renner. He spent his early childhood on the family farm south of Mandan, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for hands-on work. He attended Custer Country School #2 through eighth grade and graduated from Mandan High School in 1964. From a young age, Richard showed a keen mechanical mind, often taking apart and rebuilding anything with moving parts. He had an uncanny ability to bring life back to aging machines, a passion that only grew stronger with time.

On May 31, 1969, Richard married Julie Nelson. Together, they raised four children and built a life centered around family, hard work, and community. Though they later divorced, their shared commitment to their children remained unwavering.

While Richard spent many years operating a dairy farm, it was his true passion for welding and machining that defined much of his life. His shop was a constant hive of activity filled with projects like rebuilding tractors, dump trucks, wreckers, dozers, and semis. He loved the challenge of creating and repairing, turning metal and machinery into something useful, lasting, and often extraordinary.

In 2004, Richard began splitting his time between his home in Arizona and the farm in Mandan. He spent winters in Sun City West, enjoying the sunshine and warmth, but bored with the slower pace of life. To occupy his time, he frequented the community machine shop and eventually turned his garage into a miniature version. When he returned home for the summer, he cherished time with family, especially around the Fourth of July. Richard loved nothing more than sitting back with a cold drink and a full plate, chatting with friends and family, sharing stories, and watching the fireworks light up the North Dakota sky.

Known for his generous spirit, quick wit, and talent for storytelling, Richard touched many lives. He was a trusted friend, a proud father, and a man whose hands told the story of a lifetime of labor, creativity, and dedication. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Richard is survived by his 3 daughters, Nicole (Dean) Beehler, Mandan, Stacey (Terry) Renner, Napoleon, and Danielle (David) Banning, Peoria, AZ; his grandchildren, Lee (Nicole) Renner, Demi Beehler, Tyler (Anna), Tatum, Tristan, and Tess Gross, and Sydney Renner, Spencer, Scarlett, and Jack Banning; his great-grandchildren, Brielle and Brody Gross, and Everly and Myles Renner; and his siblings, Mary Ann Preble and Val (Mary) Renner.

Richard was preceded in death by his sons, Jacob and Eric Renner.

*WELCOME SHAWNA* Weigel & Buehler-Larson Funeral Homes are happy to announce that Shawna Helbling has joined our staff as office manager. A lifelong Mandan resident, Shawna previously worked at the Church of St. Joseph for 13 years and is a familiar face to many families we serve. Shawna has a passion for caring for families, a friendly and welcoming demeanor, and is knowledgeable about the Catholic faith and rituals. She enjoys serving others and is compassionate to those who are grieving. Shawna will partner in our office with Jessie Hilfer, who has worked for the funeral homes for 18 years.
Shawna's biography: Shawna was born and raised in Mandan, the daughter of Jody and Laurie Leingang, and is a 2002 graduate of Mandan High School. She worked at the Church of St. Joseph for over a decade before taking this role as Office Manager for Weigel and Buehler-Larson Funeral Homes. While working at the Church of St. Joseph, her true passion was working for the youth of the community. She spent a lot of time taking teenagers to trips around the country. In addition to working with the youth, her love grew to serve others and show compassion for those who were going through their joys and their sorrows. She also helped with wedding planning and funeral planning for the parish.
Shawna comes from a 3-generation military family. Her grandfather, father, and brother all served in the North Dakota National Guard, with her dad serving first in the United States Navy. She is proud to be apart of a family with such a strong military background. Working with military families will be a great joy for her.
Shawna was drawn to this role to continue to serve families from the Mandan community and surrounding areas. Through her time working at the parish, she created a lot of meaningful and lasting relationships. She is dedicated to helping families continue to celebrate the lives of their loved ones with compassion and attention to detail.
Shawna is married to her high school sweetheart, Chris, and they have three children, Sarah, Eli, and Isaac. In her spare time, she enjoys continuing to volunteer at the Church of St. Joseph and St. Joseph Schools, cooking, crafting, and playing board games with her family and friends.
