The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 6. Many people question whether that is too early. No, it is not, and doing so may save your child unnecessary and costly treatment. Once the first permanent molars erupt at age 6, much can be gleaned as to how your child’s jaws and occlusion, or bite, will develop. Waiting for all permanent teeth to erupt is not always recommended. While most children will not require treatment at this age, it is best to be evaluated so a plan can be determined early. Waiting too late can make treatment much more difficult and lead to removal of permanent teeth and/or surgery. Prevention is always the best treatment.
