At our Hygiene appointments you may have noticed we take our patients blood pressure as a vital intake. This is because blood pressure imparts an effect on oral hygiene, and the same is true in reverse. Often those with High BP, or Hypertension, display oral maladaptation's such as Xerostomia or dry mouth, which effects the microbiome of the mouth, and can have bad bacteria begin to colonize in and around the teeth. On the other hand conditions like poor periodontal health have largely been correlated with Hypertension, and studies show that sustained poor oral health can even lessen the chances of successful treatment of hypertension. Harmful bacteria can also enter the bloodstream through gums and promote systemic inflammation. For all these reasons, being aware of of our patients blood pressure gives us tremendous insight into their overall health, and allows us to take a streamlined and holistic approach in the care we provide.
