Neil's Wheels NY

Neil's Wheels NY Learn more at http://neilswheelsny.com We try to de-stigmatize mental illness and we have raised over 100,000 cans of food for Homeless Families.

Neil suffered from Schizophrenia after being a top athlete and friend to many. Neil’s Wheels was started to teach families about mental illness and to encourage the students to open up about any problem. The feeding of the Homeless came about, when the Manhasset Students wanted to do something special for Neil. They wanted to give food to Neil at Thanksgiving, 2009, but Neil wanted the food to go

to the Homeless Shelters in the Long Island area. That first thanksgiving, Manhasset donated so much food, that the Coach and I needed 6 Homeless Shelters to deliver the food to. The Manhasset students wouldn’t stop, and we did it again for the holidays, and we brought the food to the 6 Homeless Shelters. Then Manhasset wanted to feed these hungry families all winter long and Neil’s Wheels was born. There were 5 classes participating in the food drive, and once every 5 weeks, a different class was in charge of collecting cans of food. Then, Coach Rule and I would bring the food to the Church or Temple in charge for the evening, and we would help with the Homeless dinners on Wednesday evenings. Then, Manhasset decided to have a dance in Neil’s honor, and this dance, that you can see pictures of in the Neil’s Wheels events, brought in 821 cans of food. Each student was required to bring 3 cans of food to the dance to get into the dance. I tell these students that anyone can become Homeless and anyone can have mental problems as well as drug addiction, alcoholism, etc. The key is to get help and to talk to your parents, and teachers and coaches and your friends when you have a problem. It is worse to keep that problem a secret. Neil’s Wheels is expanding. We now have St Peters and the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and even The National Honor Society allows the students to select Neil’s Wheels as their community service. The key to our program, is we monitor where the food goes and we actively work with the Ecumenical Food Pantries, and the churches and temples that serve the Homeless. And, we are a local program. We will expand, and we will be a new foundation soon. For now, the checks you give to help us can be made out to St Hugh Project Hope, and Temple Beth El and to First Presbyterian Church of Northport. We will be back to you to tell you where your food and money went. You can choose which pantry or which program you want your food, clothing and money to go to. We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks to everyone who donated food to NeilsWheels as the final total is 100,000 cans.

Tom DiBlasi and family probably donated over 20,000 cans in 10 years.

One MHS graduating year donated 5000 cans of Tuna used to make a huge display at the Senior Frolic.

Besides raising food I spoke at many schools about opening up about mental illness.

I believe we helped lessen the stigma of being mentally ill.

Mental illness affects 25% of our population.

Happy New Year. Always open up and let your family and friends know how you are doing.

In 2025, seek help if you feel depressed.

25% of our population has some issues.

Doing nothing, won’t help.

Happy New Year.

If anyone is schizophrenic, I suggest doing what I did for my son, which is creating NeilsWheelsny.com

Open up.

Create a charity in your loved one’s name. I did.

We raised over 100,000 cans of food in Neil’s honor and guess what

From the mental hospital he said he had a job.He took pride in helping the homeless families our food went to thru
LI Cares and The Gerald Ryan Outreach.

Doing nothing, does not help.

As a Caregiver, I felt better that my son’s life was not in vain.

Hi from NeilsWheelsny.com

Neil is thinking of all his friends thru me. And, probably loved Atlanta’s win tonight.

Tomorrow will be two years ago that Neil passed. It is still hard to believe. Cherish every minute you have with your loved ones. NO ONE knows their tomorrows.

Neil always said to me, Dad, tell everyone I am OK. Don't feel sorry for me.

And, tell them, If you haven't achieved your goals in life, Don't worry, You still have time.

We wish you a fabulous summer. We also hope you can donate cans of food for our hungry LI neighbors. Call me for details on running a food fund raiser. I would have LI Cares deliver a huge box or two that people could put their donations into. Then, I would have our volunteers pick up the box(es) on the day best for you.

The best donations ask their guests at a party or office to bring in 3 cans of food. 30 people is 90 cans. etc
