Just wrapped up a powerful Practitioners Town Hall call with Dr. Dale Bredesen at Apollo Health, where we discussed the many REAL REASONS behind the cognitive decline epidemic. It's a crisis, and it's personal for me.

Sometimes, I think people see my dedication to this and think I'm a little crazy. But after nearly 20 years in integrated functional and Chinese medicine, I'm more determined than ever to help people understand that there are real, treatable causes of brain decline. We can find real solutions!

My passion comes from a very personal place. At 40, I faced a devastating diagnosis. Surgeons at the top 3 Los Angeles medical centers told me I needed a kidney transplant and would have a diminished lifespan. They admitted they didn't know how to treat my condition.

It was terrifying, but I refused to accept that. I chose a functional medicine path, and it completely changed my life. I regained my health and found my calling.

Now, I see the same thing happening with cognitive decline. Conventional medicine only offers a pill to slow symptoms, but it doesn't address the root causes.

That's why I'm so committed to spreading the word: thanks to pioneers like Dr. Bredesen, we now have definitive evidence that degenerative brain changes have specific, identifiable causes. And if caught early, these changes can be reversed! But many conventional doctors aren't embracing this information. It's frustrating, but it fuels my passion.

Seeing people understand the possibility for their own brain health, that's what keeps me going. Because we have so much power to make a difference in cognitive decline.

I discovered the POWER of PATTY CAKE . . . by mistake!

It became clear to me that something incredible happened that night when my family spontaneously erupted into an hours long session of INTENSE patty cake.

Besides the out-of-nowhere emergence of this child's game in an evening of grief, everyone (even the macho macho men) became mesmerized by the wildly invigorating mental/physical team activity.

What came over us?

We played incessantly with increasingly complex patterns for hours that night. It was hysterically satisfying. When we finally ended, we were high for hours with buzzing brains even into the following day.

That's when I realized that our brains had changed!

We had bathed our brains for hours that night with a molecule called BDNF - which is like fertilizer to the brain! BDNF actually helps our brains grow connections.

It's a common experience. Many people go through life unaware of their low oxygen levels during sleep until symptoms like daytime fatigue, snoring, or gasping for air become too much to ignore. Unfortunately, poor nighttime oxygenation - even in the low 90s - can lead to mitochondrial damage. That is why it is important to evaluate your breathing whether or not you feel like you have symptoms.

A continuous nighttime pulse oximeter can be a valuable tool in understanding and managing this condition. This device monitors your blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) throughout the night, allowing you to track your oxygen levels and identify potential issues.

By using a continuous pulse oximeter, you can:

✅ Identify low oxygen episodes: Detect periods of apnea or hypopnea.
Monitor treatment effectiveness: Track the effectiveness of CPAP therapy or other treatments.

Your mitochondria, the powerhouses of your cells, depend on oxygen to function optimally. They use oxygen to convert nutrients into energy, fueling your body's activities.

‼️But what happens when your oxygen levels drop, especially during sleep?

Poor nighttime oxygen saturation, often associated with sleep apnea, can have a detrimental impact on mitochondrial health:

🆘 Reduced energy production: Mitochondria need oxygen to generate energy. Low oxygen levels can lead to fatigue and weakness.
🆘 Oxidative stress: When mitochondria struggle to produce energy, they can generate harmful free radicals, damaging cells and tissues.
🆘 Inflammation: Low oxygen levels can trigger inflammation, further harming mitochondria and contributing to chronic health conditions.

To ensure your mitochondria are getting the oxygen they need:

How many mitochondria are in a single cell?

Ever wondered how many tiny powerhouses are buzzing around inside you? The answer might surprise you!

The number of mitochondria in a cell varies widely depending on the cell's job. For example, a hardworking muscle cell might have thousands (in one single cell!), while a less active cell might have just a few.

For example:

▪Muscle cells: These hardworking cells need lots of energy, so they pack in thousands of mitochondria.
▪Liver cells: Also high-energy consumers, liver cells can have hundreds to thousands of mitochondria.
▪Brain cells: Brain cells are super metabolically active. While the brain is only 2% of our body weight, it uses 20% of our mitochondrial energy!

🩸Here's the kicker: Red blood cells don't have any mitochondria at all!
