๐ŸŒผ April is Stress Awareness Month, and it's crucial to acknowledge the cyclical relationship between chronic disease and stress. For those living with conditions like IC/BPS, stress can not only exacerbate symptoms but also be a consequence of managing chronic pain.

Here's how to break the cycle:

- Practice mindfulness: Techniques such as meditation can reduce stress levels and help manage pain.

- Stay active: Gentle exercise adapted to your condition can improve both physical and mental health.

- Seek support: Whether it's from a healthcare professional or a support group, you're not alone.

Let's use this month to raise awareness and support each other in finding effective ways to manage stress. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿฃ This Easter, as we gather with family and celebrate with festive meals, it's important to remember that managing stress and diet can be particularly challenging for those living with chronic conditions like IC/BPS. Here are a few tips to navigate the holiday:

1. Plan ahead of time: If dietary restrictions are part of your management plan, consider bringing your own IC-friendly dishes to family gatherings.

2. Set boundaries: It's okay to take time for yourself if you're feeling overwhelmed.

3. Seek support: Lean on loved ones who understand your condition and can provide emotional support.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and joyful Easter! Remember, prioritizing your health is the best way to enjoy these moments to the fullest. ๐ŸŒท

๐ŸŒ Every four years, on the rare 29th of February, we observe Rare Disease Day. It's a moment to shed light on conditions that are less common but significantly impact people's lives worldwide, like Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS).

IC/BPS, though not classified as a rare disease by all standards, shares the common challenges of rare diseases: the need for greater awareness, research, and access to care. Its relatively unknown status can make diagnosis and treatment a lengthy, isolating journey for many. On this Rare Disease Day, let's:

- Raise Awareness: Share information to educate others about IC/BPS and similar conditions.

- Advocate for Research: Support initiatives aimed at understanding and treating these conditions.

- Build Community: Connect with others to share experiences and support.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those dealing with rare and less understood diseases. Because everyone deserves recognition, support, and hope. ๐Ÿ’œ

The symptoms of Overactive Bladder Syndrome can make the patient feel embarrassed, which results in a poor diagnosis rate and untreated patients. Most surveys say that the prevalence could be between 11-17%.
The symptoms can be easily confused with other urinary tract diseases, so if they are recurring, it is important to visit a specialist.
We have collected the most important information about this disease in our blog post below: https://www.urosystem.com/blog/overactive-bladder-syndrome-a-more-than-bothersome-condition

The main advantages of local treatment in case of Interstitial Cystitis:
1. The drug doesn't enter the blood circulation โ€“ which means much less side effects.
2. It may result in a higher concentration of the active compounds.
3. It can be the fastest way to alleviate the symptoms.

Local treatment means instilling the drug directly into the bladder, which can be performed in a painless way, without complications with our innovative product, the UroDapter: https://www.urodapter.com/en

Patients often refuse instillation therapy because they are afraid of the pain and the risk of further complications a catheter can cause. So many doctors tend to avoid using a catheter unless it's absolutely inevitable.

The UroDapter offers a minimally invasive solution for bladder instillation, primarily for the following indications:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Preventing Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (rUTI)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Post-cancer treatment: chemotherapy-induced cystitis, radiation cystitis
๐Ÿ‘‰ Instilling analgesics, local anesthetics, or anti-inflammatories for any indication
๐Ÿ‘‰ It may be applied for diagnostic purposes, such as retrograde urethrography or fistulography

Urinary tract infection is considered to be the second most common form of infection. Did you know that any initial damage to the GAG-layer (Glycosaminoglycan layer) caused by an infection โ€“ which frequently happens in severe UTI conditions โ€“ helps the bacteria persist and cause more infections?
If you also often struggle with cystitis symptoms, don't take it lightly, see a urologist!
You can read more about the most common symptoms and possible treatment methods here:

Have you ever been told that pain exists only in your head?
If you hear this, keep looking until you find a doctor who takes your symptoms seriously.
Obviously, a psychologist can help the patients cope with the disease, improve their self-assessment. It should never be forgotten that any psychological treatment may complement, but never replace the physical therapy.

The healthy mucus layer of the bladder mucosa โ€“ which consists of glucose-amino-glycan or GAG โ€“ prevents salts, acids, and other metabolic products (being present in the urine naturally) getting into the deeper layers of the bladder wall and irritating the sub-mucosal pain receptors. In Interstitial Cystitis, this GAG-layer is deficient and enables the compounds described above to reach the receptors. The constant irritation raises the number of pain receptors, which makes the symptoms worse.

Misdiagnosis and mistreatment occur mostly because patients turn to a gynecologist instead of a urologist with bladder problems.
In those cases gynecologists should send the patient in this case to a urologist. If you haven't seen one yet, read our previous blog post on this topic!
