You may have seen a recent increase in drug companies advertising how oral antidiabetic medications can reduce the risk of heart disease in someone with type 2 diabetes. Why is this important? Because there is a well-established correlation between diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Any form of aerobic exercise or resistance training can bolster your cardiovascular health when performed five days a week—for 30 minutes at a time—says Dr. Anuj Shah, MD, an Interventional Cardiologist with Apex Heart and Vascular Center

"The most important thing is to develop a regular exercise routine that will allow you to break a sweat and be mildly short of breath, but still be able to speak a few words in a conversation," he says. Once you've found a regimen that helps you meet this baseline, he suggests switching it up every two to three weeks to train different muscle groups.

For most people, starting an exercise regimen should involve low intensity activity. "However, you should check with your cardiologist first if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, arthritis, or are being treated for cancer," Dr. Shah flags. "Likewise, if you are normally sedentary and not very active, it is recommended that you see your doctor first before starting a regular exercise regimen." Low-intensity activities, like walking at a casual pace, swimming laps, using an elliptical, cycling gently, and light weight lifting are all good starting points.

These are the best exercises to boost heart health, according to cardiologists. In addition to taking part in activities like jogging, swimming, and biking, it's important to create a consistent routine you can do regularly.

As a diabetes educator, it is important to share the message about diabetes, amputation prevention and diabetic foot care. While many people understand what a heart attack is, they do not understand what a diabetic foot attack is. My mission is to change that by starting the conversation on this.

I was honored to have the opportunity to present on this topic internationally last week to the Australian audience on the SugarByHalf show.

TOPIC: What is a diabetic foot attack and how do you prevent one?

“These apps are the future.” That’s what Anuj Shah, MD, an interventional cardiologist at Apex Heart and Vascular Center in New Jersey, says about diabetes apps. Dr. Shah is one of many medical professionals who views the smartphone-based trackers as a useful tool for people living with the condition.

“Especially during , there is such a huge need to monitor things remotely,” Dr. Shah says. “We are trying to manage people’s blood pressure, their heart rate remotely. Diabetes is the next big frontier where we can manage blood sugars remotely. The apps do have a lot of potential.”

When it comes to choosing—and using—a diabetes app, Dr. Shah reminds us that apps are tools with great potential, but what it really comes down to is yourself.

“What it requires is motivation,” he says. “Diabetes can affect literally every organ system in the body. We have a lot of tools once somebody is motivated.”

These digital tools can help you manage symptoms and blood sugar

Diet is only part of the problem. “People with unhealthy diets are often the same people who don't exercise and have poorly controlled blood pressure, cholesterol and profiles, which all put them at risk of heart disease and stroke,” said Anuj R. Shah, MD, an interventional cardiologist and founder of Apex Heart and Vascular Center in New Jersey. Smoking and being overweight can also raise the risk of heart disease.

Once a person with heart disease adopts a healthy lifestyle, the positive changes to their health can be measured, Dr. Shah told Medical Daily.

“We see tremendous results on their cardiac tests showing reduction in plaque content,” as well as lowered blood pressure and improved lipid, or cholesterol, levels.

What foods fight inflammation?

The Mediterranean diet includes anti-inflammatory and heart-healthy foods, agreed Dr. Shah and Ms. Weiner.

The diet revolves around:

✔️Whole fruits and vegetables
✔️Whole grains
✔️Healthy fats
✔️Moderate amounts of fish, poultry, beans and eggs
✔️Moderate amounts of dairy

Eating an unhealthy diet from a young age may lead to heart disease later in life, especially if your diet is full of inflammation-causing foods.
