Wildlife Beneficial Grazing Systems

๐Ÿ”ฅ Patch Burn Grazing: A grazing system involving the use of prescribed fire to direct the intensity of grazing on differing portions of a pasture, creating the mosaic required for wildlife habitat.

๐Ÿ„ Rotational Grazing: This grazing system is designed for livestock to move into divided sections, allowing areas to rest following grazing. Proper utilization can achieve the necessary wildlife habitat components.

๐Ÿ“‹ Grazing Plans: The creation and follow-though of a grazing plan is an excellent first step to effective grazing. Adjustments can be made to any grazing plan to manage for wildlife.

BREAKING NEWS!
Pheasants Forever applauds the U.S. Department of Agriculture announcement today accepting nearly 1.8 million acres into the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).

โ€œFor four decades, CRP has delivered unmatched benefits for wildlife habitat, soil health and water quality,โ€ said Andrew Schmidt, Pheasants Forever and Quail Foreverโ€™s director of government affairs. โ€œThanks to swift action by the Trump administration on a condensed timeline, the program now effectively stands at full enrollment, reflecting its value and standing among the nation's farmers and ranchers as a critical component of their business operation and the farm safety net.โ€

For nearly four decades, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has been one of Americaโ€™s most successful conservation tools. It has restored millions of acres of wildlife habitat, improved soil health and water quality, and strengthened rural economies across the country.

CRP is also a critical part of the farm safety net, giving farmers and ranchers the flexibility to manage risk, generate reliable on-farm income, and protect their most sensitive acres.

But with CRP authority set to expire at the end of September, Congress must act now to strengthen and modernize the program. Lawmakers need to hear from people like you who care about farming, wildlife, and rural America.

Patch Burn Grazing Benefits Northern Bobwhite Broods!

SITE SELECTION
Broods selected areas with... greater proportions of native grass managed with burning & grazing

SURVIVAL
Brood survival was greater where native grass as burned & grazed within the last two growing seasons.
Broods that survived to 35 days showed stronger selection for shrub cover than broods that failed.

Batch Burned & Grazed Native Grassland
Patch burning increases broadleaf plants providing cover, seeds, and insects (food).
cover: from predators & weather
seeds: food for adults
insects: food for chicks
Northern Bobwhite broods had greater selection for AND survival on patch burned & grazed sites.
