Those who are interested in integrative medicine approaches to treating Alzheimer's, will be very interested in this study.

A new study suggests practicing yoga may enhance cognitive function in older adults who are at risk for cognitive decline. The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, involved a total of 108 participants, ages 55-85 years old. The participants were randomly assigned to either a yoga intervention group or a control group. The yoga intervention consisted of 12 weeks of yoga sessions that included physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. The control group did not partake in any yoga activities. The participants' cognitive function was assessed before and after the 12-week period using various neuropsychological tests. The study found that the participants in the yoga group demonstrated significant improvements in cognitive function compared to those in the control group. Specifically, improvements were observed in areas such as information processing speed, working memory, and executive function.

A.J. Terrell, cornerback for the Falcons, has been practicing yoga asana, alongside his regular training, since he was a rookie football player.

During this season, Terrell suffered his worst injury in his career. While recovering for the past three weeks from his hamstring injury, his yoga practice helped him to stay grounded, and kept his mind at ease.

"Being able to just get away. Mentally, doing stretches, and doing things to help me get back but also, yoga helped with a lot of mental.โ€

RESEARCH: Yoga Benefits Heart Conditions

In 2020, the CDC estimated that 1 in every 5 deaths in the U.S. was caused by heart disease and related conditions. Some of the most common Cardiovascular Diseases are coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, heart arrhythmia, heart failure, and heart attack. Cardiovascular exercise is often recommended for heart health, but it doesnโ€™t address heart diseases, underlying number one underlying cause: STRESS

Yogaโ€™s list of stress-reducing benefits is long and include clarity of mind, improved mood, and improved sleep. While there are reported benefits of yoga for heart conditions, itโ€™s also important to look at safety considerations.

Multiple studies give evidence to these top six benefits of yoga for heart conditions:

1. Cardiovascular Conditioning
2. Lowered Cholesterol
3. Controlled Blood Pressure
4. Improved Quality of Life
5. Possibly Reduced Mortality Rates
6. Potentially Fewer Cardiac Distress Episodes

Since the term โ€˜yogaโ€™ encompasses multiple modalities and a wide variety of practices, itโ€™s important to know the types of yoga and breathwork practices that are generally inappropriate for heart conditions.

Fluid balance is very important for people with heart conditions. People have a tendency to overdrink fluids when they are dehydrated by the heat, which can sometimes create a situation where they require hospitalization for supplemental oxygen and/or medications to remove some of the extra fluid.

of various Pranayamas and the heart referenced a case study in which a spontaneous pneumothorax was caused by a person doing this technique. Another 2017 study observed that the technique negatively affected peopleโ€™s blood pressure.

๐—ž๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ - A 2019 article in the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention, warns of โ€œKundalini syndrome,โ€ in which practitioners may experience headaches, elevated blood pressure, and an elevated heart rate after doing the style without proper supervision.

๐™๐™๐™š ๐˜ฝ๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ข ๐™‡๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š: While many cardiologists are big fans of yoga and its benefits, they are not all experts in yoga. Many medical professionals may recommend a patient โ€œdo yoga,โ€ without considering the wide variety of styles and intensity levels. Be extremely clear with your doctor about the type of yoga youโ€™re considering so that your doctor can more specifically advise on how to adjust your practice and when you may need to.

RESEARCH: Can โ€˜Facial Yogaโ€™ Rejuvenate the Aging Faceโ€ฆ AND Help You Look Younger?

Physical manifestations of facial aging are now understood to include not only skin laxity and superficial photodamage but also deeper substructural volume loss of fat and muscle.

Researchers tasked a small group of women aged 40-65 to complete a series of facial workouts 30 mins / day, for 20 weeks to see if toning facial muscles can create a more youthful look. These exercises focused on strengthening and building up underlying muscle in the cheeks, jawline, neck, eyelids and eyebrows.

Results indicate improved mid-face and lower face fullness. Plus, participants appeared about three years younger as compared to their baseline established at the start of the program.

โ€œIn considering the results, keep in mind that itโ€™s a small group of highly motivated participants who were willing to do 30 minutes facial exercises daily. Unless someone is highly motivated, itโ€™s hard to sustain these facial exercises over a long period of time and achieve these results.โ€

Sแด›แดœแด…ส: Yoga Found to be Promising Treatment Option for Those With Neuropathic Pain due to Lumbar Disc Herniation

A total of 48 patients with neuropathic pain due to LDH were randomly assigned to a control group and a yoga group. All patients underwent a patient education program. The selected yoga exercise was taught and performed to the yoga group for one hour twice weekly for a total of 12 weeks.

โ€œTreating neuropathic pain due to lumbar disc herniation is challenging. Its pharmacological management involves adverse effects, and these drugs can only lessen pain by 30-50%. In our trial, a step-by-step yoga program was performed within the range of the study participantsโ€™ tolerability, avoiding excessive flexion or extension of the lumbar spine for patients with neuropathic pain due to lumbar disc herniation. In conclusion, we achieved a high patient global assessment score with only minor adverse effects in the yoga group. We hope our trial encourages doctors in supporting exercise as medicine.โ€
