There is absolutely nothing wrong with Nana or Papa asking for a hug. 👵 However, FORCING your child to give Nana or Papa a hug is not a good way to teach bodily autonomy, empowerment, or consent.

I always seek out a child's permission before hugging them, even if they are family. It's their choice. They are allowed to say no without hurting my feelings. It is not their job to appease me through physical touch.

Advocate for your child if they are being tickled, hugged, kissed, or touched against their wishes.

Discourage secrets - even silly ones. Kids can't always tell the difference between harmless fun and serious matters.

Teach your children proper anatomical terms. There have been sexual abuse charges dropped because the child was not able to accurately describe what happened to them. 😳 Correct anatomical terms are not bad words.

Today’s White House event on autism was filled with dangerous claims and misleading information that sends a confusing message to parents and expecting parents and does a disservice to autistic individuals.

We know autism is complex, highly variable and increasingly linked to genetics. Individualized plans, often involving a combination of developmental, behavioral, educational and social-relational strategies, can help improve outcomes that are meaningful to individuals and families. We also need and welcome additional investments in federally funded research to better support families of autistic children.

Families who have questions about their child’s medications, autism care plans or other health care should consult with their pediatrician or health care provider.
