The American bison or buffalo 🦬 (Yvnnash, pronounced Yah-nahsh, in Choctaw) is the most significant animal to many American Indian nations.

For thousands of years, Native Americans relied heavily on bison for their survival and well-being, using every part of the bison for food, clothing, shelter, tools, jewelry and in ceremonies. 🪶

The decimation of millions of bison in the 1800s was pivotal in the tragic devastation of Indian people and society. Today, bison are central to many American Indian traditions, spiritual rituals and healthy diets, and more than 60 tribes are bringing the sacred Buffalo back to their families, lands and ways of life! ✨

Most bison in Oklahoma and surrounding states today are descended from these four small herds. The Choctaw Nation has a small herd of about 60 buffalo roaming the lands of one of its ranches in southeastern Oklahoma. 🌻

'Issi' or 'Deer' in Choctaw, is the foundational component to our newest product: Issi Tallow.

To not waste any part of the animal, my Choctaw ancestors used tallow for skin health, cooking, a tool lubricant, leather conditioner, and even used in cultural practices and ceremonies.

Yep, we're on the tallow train now!

Our Issi Tallow has a rich nutrient profile and moisturizing properties. It contains vitamins A, D, and E, as well as fatty acids, which can help hydrate, soften, and protect the skin. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties may be helpful for minor cuts, scrapes, and skin conditions like eczema. This is also in part to the infused botanicals. Generally safe enough to use on babies 6 months and older, but patch test beforehand.

Today begins National Bison Month! 🦬

Thanks to a coalition of conservationists, ranchers and Indigenous communities, some 20,000 bison now live in conservation herds in the U.S. (in sum, roughly 500,000 inhabit public and private lands, ranches and zoos).

To honor the animal’s vast contributions to America’s cultural and ecological heritage, the National Bison Legacy Act of 2016 federally designated bison as America’s National Mammal, and since then, July has been recognized as National Bison Month.
