Just months after my new office was complete, the pandemic hit. It was a rush to find a way to provide counseling, especially since we were all experiencing a collective trauma. A new virtual office in my home developed. It granted me the opportunity to not only serve clients, but to spend more time with my senior cat. Many people got to know Jax and I happily got to know their pets as well.

I ventured into private practice after undergoing almost a year of treatment for breast cancer. After being on long term disability for several months during radiation treatment, I lost my position at the agency where I worked. Rather than applying for a much lower paying position within the same agency, I decided it was time to move on. I felt driven to work with a larger population like adults, cancer survivors, and couples, in addition to still counseling children and families. I was challenged in so many ways to go out on my own, but 10 years later I can definitely say it was all worth it!

Reflecting back on my 10 years in private practice…The first office was located at the building and served as a great place to serve for three years. While mental healthcare is more openly discussed and encouraged today, there was still stigma associated with it 10 years ago. I wanted counseling to be something that was openly acknowledged and talked about. Having a visible office was an important factor in accomplishing that. People in the community were welcome to drop in between appointments to ask questions and gather information. It was a great space!

The support of family, friends, and the community has been incredible and I am truly grateful!Taking the beginning steps in seeking counseling can often be the hardest.
