Hold the mother, not the baby.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Because the baby’s being taken care of—⁣⁣
fed, snuggled, and given all the love in the world—⁣⁣
by not only the mother,⁣⁣
but her partner, grandparents, siblings, cousins, and friends.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But the mother,⁣⁣
may have gaps in her mind from lack of sleep,⁣⁣
may be mechanical in her motions as she’s healing,⁣⁣
may feel more like a mess than a mother,⁣⁣
may be sitting in bed, crying, feeling overwhelmed in her body and life,⁣⁣
may be full of mom guilt because in her mind, "she's not good enough,"⁣⁣
and she’s bleeding, wincing in pain, swollen and emotional.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And the mother’s that baby's whole world and needs to be seen, so she doesn't disappear into that postpartum fog.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So, hold the mother, not the baby.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A mother agrees that her baby matters more.⁣⁣
But she’s hurting, while she’s the person behind the baby,⁣⁣
in the background, making it all happen:⁣⁣
feeding her baby at all hours,⁣⁣
snuggling her baby close to comfort newborn cries,⁣⁣
and being that baby’s everything.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So, it’s the mother who needs your love.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And a mother will remember who held her up.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So instead of “I’m coming to see the baby,”⁣⁣
try saying, “I’m coming to see you 𝘢𝘯𝘥 meet the baby, too.”⁣⁣

Because the mother needs to be held more.⁣⁣

Check out this recent article in support of Doula Services.
“Employing a Doula as part of a birthing team decreases C-sections by 50%, shortens the time of labor by 25% and decreases the need for other medical interventions by more than 50%, according to the National Black Doulas Association.”

The purpose of World Doula Week (WDW) is to empower doulas all over the world to improve the physiological, social, emotional, and psychological health of women, newborns and families in birth and in the postpartum period.
The benefits of the presence of doulas in birth and in the postpartum period:
- Reduces the incidence of c-sections
- May shorten the length of labor
- Reduces epidural and analgesic requests
- Increases breastfeeding initiation and continuation
- Increases mother’s satisfaction of birth experience
- Can reduce the incidence of postpartum mood disorders
- Increases new parents’ confidence in the care of their newborn

This is a good analogy for what Doulas do during labor and birth. To help our clients go from terrified to calm!

I’ve had several mothers go past their due date. I love this article explaining this time as “In-Between” and validating all of the emotions and physical discomforts of this time.

“To give birth, whether at home in a birth tub with candles and family or in a surgical suite with machines and a neonatal team, a woman must go to the place between this world and the next, to that thin membrane between here and there. To the place where life comes from, to the mystery, in order to reach over to bring forth the child that is hers.”

The last days of pregnancy are a distinct time of in-between. It's a tricky time for mothers, as these last few days are biological and psychological events. She's curled up on the couch, waiting, a ball of baby and emotions. A scrambled pile of books on pregnancy, labor, baby names...

The views will be breathtaking and the sense of accomplishment real!

Having a birth doula will ease the anxiety during pregnancy and help answer questions and set expectations for what’s to come in labor and delivery. A birth doula will support you in labor, providing comfort measures and emotional support. The power of positive thoughts and encouragement provided by a Doula will make all the difference in the experience of childbirth.

During a recent birth I attended, I could tell the mother was feeling physically unmotivated and emotionally weary. She was sitting on a birthing ball and between contractions, I pulled a stool up to face her. I took her hands gently and looked into her eyes. Then I explained that I understood she was feeling weary and I was there to support her and help motivate her. Because in front of her was a mountain to climb and when she reached the top, she would feel so completely inspired and satisfied. The views will be breathtaking and the sense of accomplishment real. But for now, in that moment, she needed to gather her energy to climb. It was going to be hard, exhausting but I knew she has the will and the power to do it. I reminded her that her husband and I were right there with her every step, providing support and encouragement. I knew she could do it. And we climbed together for the next several hours. She was persistent and strong and so completely inspiring.
