Mayo Clinic researchers have identified a specific immune cell that can be targeted to give a boost to standard immunotherapies for cancer. Two research teams, working collaboratively but using distinct approaches, found that "first-responder" immune cells known as myeloid cells can be manipulated to enhance the activity of tumor-killing T cells.

For the first time, Mayo Clinic experts transmitted themselves as live 3D holograms more than 4,000 miles away to present at an innovative medical and healthcare summit in Brazil.

Giselle Coelho Caselato, M.D., Ph.D., and William D. Freeman, M.D., were invited to speak about Mayo Clinic's STR-X Fellowship Program and how it is advancing healthcare education in rural, remote and underserved areas through advanced technology. From Mayo Clinic in Florida, Dr. Coelho and Dr. Freeman presented to about 650 people in São Paulo, Brazil, and 4,500 people online, interacting with them in real-time.

"It's really powerful how we can change the world with technology. And we see 3D holographic transmission as being the next step in education for the future," says Dr. Freeman.

Mayo Clinic researchers are looking for individuals ages 3-24 who are having surgery for cancer in the chest, abdomen, or pelvis and their parent or primary caregiver, to participate in a research study.
