Can’t wait to host the first intro to somatic yoga class series at Ember Wellness Studio!!

Spend your Thursdays in April creating a personalized somatic yoga practice based on your body's unique needs that you can implement into your daily routine!

Join us as Alyssa with Collective Remedy, PLLC takes us on a 4-week journey through the healing power of somatic yoga.

Somatic yoga (SomaYoga) is a blend of neuroscience, classic yoga practices, and functional movement that builds intelligent and conscious body awareness. It releases tension patterns and retrains muscle imbalances. It regulates the nervous system, calms the mind, and strengthens the body. The blended methodology cultivates the ability to stimulate the relaxation response and creates a sense of safety in the body that allows the body to release tension, stress, trauma, and stuck emotions.

This class is accessible to everybody as you are guided into postures, movements, and variations that are just right for your body’s needs that day. It is ideal for anyone interested in finding a more free, curious, and aware relationship with their interconnected mind/body/spirit. No prior yoga experience is necessary.

The next few posts I make will highlight the benefits of somatic yoga. Most of us go about our days stuck in our stress responses. Our bodies end up holding a habituated stress response the leads to patterns of excess tension in the body. Somatic yoga helps you to become aware of your body’s habituated stress response and tension patterns and also gives you the tools to release the tension and be able to tap into your relaxation response. Trauma has a way of stealing our joy and making us believe that we do not deserve good in our life. One way to work on breaking the cycles of generational trauma is to allow yourself to feel joy, experience awe, and find moments of peace. My friend, you deserve these things.

We all have aspects of ourselves that we do not like. It is ingrained in us to not value ourselves as we are, but rather to never see ourselves as good enough. Befriending your body counteracts what we've been taught to critique and instead see the value and beauty in what is there.

Instead of meeting these parts of you with criticism and judgment, try meeting them with compassion and empathy. Try being with these parts of you as if they were your best friend or most prized possession. Handle your body with the attention, love and care you would these things.

Befriending your body allows you to actually take care of yourself and meet your needs. Befriending your body and the emotional parts held within is where healing takes place.

You don't have to be a perfect parent. You just have to be there. Be the calm in their storm, the steady in their chaos, the certainty in their fear.

Accepting the reality that they will experience pain and suffering frees you from the unrealistic expectation that you will be able to protect your child from hurt.

Instead of putting your energy and attention to preventing pain, put it towards your own healing work so you can develop the ability to stay present with them when they are experiencing something that feels too big, too uncertain, or too overwhelming without making it about yourself or confining it to what you can handle.

Hyper-independence is a trauma response more common than folks realize because the traits of the response are often praised in today's society as someone being dedicated, a hard-worker, driven to climb their professional ladder, and a perfectionist. Although less-often identified as a trauma response, it is just as important to sort through what is driving the hyper-independence as it is to work on someone's codependent behaviors. If this sounds like you so far, here are a few common signs that you may be using hyper-independence as a protective mechanism to feel safe:

Signs of hyper-independence:
-- difficulty asking for help or accepting it when offered
-- tendency to take on too much
-- tendency towards perfectionism
-- worry about being a burden to others
-- trying to prevent rejection by keeping people at arms length
-- in an effort of avoidance they prioritize their career or profession over relationships
-- flee relationships when they start to build an attachment to someone
-- seem unemotional, detached, reserved, cold
-- difficulty labeling emotions and expressing them
-- striving to be self-sufficient
-- avoid social gatherings, events, and opportunities to connect with others
-- difficulty delegating tasks

Your friendly reminder to spend some time this weekend allowing yourself to just be.

In a society that prioritizes hustle-culture it can feel impossible to not be doing something all of the time. We feel guilt if we aren't maximizing our time. Yet, it is vitally important to your mental health to give yourself space to "be" rather than always "do". For example, the being is where you get to know yourself and your loved ones one a deeper level. In the being you get connected back into your body and to your immediate environment. In the being you realign with your values, wants, wishes, and needs. In the being you listen rather than distract and avoid. In the being is where intentional self-care resides.

I frequently notice the difficulty my children have with this skill. When we have free time they label it with boredom. They get uncomfortable with stretches of time with nothing to do. This year, it is a priority in my family to find snippets of time each week to allow ourselves to experience what it is to be a human being, not just a human doing.
