There were seven cremation burials on the calendar for Saturday. This one was a double set up for the same family. We’re trying to get as many families as possible taken care of before the upcoming Memorial Day.

I had to leave the truck at the road yesterday. Couldn’t make it through the tangled groups of markers and monuments. Didn’t haul any extra dirt away from this one.

I’m back in Norseland today. This small cemetery was established in 1854 and has very little activity. For comparison, Minneopa Cemetery by the state park was established in 1855 and is very active and growing. After seeing the waterfalls and the bison, stop in for a self guided history tour at the cemetery!

I was doing a re set of a civil war veterans marker and found this buried underneath it. It is a broken off top of an old upright marker. I thought it may have symbolized a fraternal organization, but some research shows a different meaning. The hands show either someone being released to leave earth and go to heaven or the hand of God leading you into heaven. I’ve seen it before but never knew what it meant.

I’ve driven past this sign and parked by it during funerals, but didn’t take the time to read it until yesterday. It’s a pretty interesting piece of history. Many of you will recognize the Marysburg Catholic Church steeple in the background.

The bell still stands and the cemetery and grounds are still maintained, but the church is long gone. Shrinking congregations and maintenance costs on these old historic structures caused the closure of many rural churches.

Mikey was really a loving son. He had this big block of black granite installed in memory of his mom. Pretty impressive.
