Better late than never! Introducing Gabriela, one of our clinical interns that started this spring semester:

Hi! I’m Gabriela Passmore, a Master of Social Work student and clinical intern here at Rural Behavioral Health Clinic. I grew up on a hobby farm in Stewart, Minnesota and have lived in the Mankato area for about 15 years, currently residing in rural Mankato with four cats and chickens. Growing up in a rural Minnesota informs my passion for the work I do, striving to provide resources and foster connections in environments that can feel isolating.

Before returning to school, I held a variety of professional roles as a writer, café supervisor, and a DIII Track & Field/Cross Country Coach. I’m also a Graduate Assistant Writing Tutor at MNSU. In my free time, I most enjoy active hobbies such as long distance running, curling, and skiing.

As an aspiring clinical social worker, it’s important to me that all clients feel truly heard, seen, and accepted for who they are. I approach clients with a trauma-informed, person-centered lens. Much of my experience includes working with college students, including international students from all over the world.

Better late than never! We would also like you to meet Austin, who is one of our case management interns that started this spring semester:

Hello! My name is Austin Thomas, I am a social work intern here at the RBHC. I am studying for a Bachelor’s in social work at MNSU, and will start on the Master’s program come Summer of 2026! I have a passion for rural Minnesota, growing up in Faribault with a lot of my family being farmers in Shieldsville, and also living in Waterville while in high school. I worked at the local community center in Faribault, helping out the community in areas such as the Aquatic center, Youth Night, and management in general. I got into social work by connecting with communities and wanting to help those around me. I enjoy writing, reading, and getting to know people. I’ll bike the Sakatah Lake Trail or take my kayak into the water when the weather is nice, or I’ll spend time playing video games with friends and family when the snow comes down. I hope to make everyone feel listened and cared for at the RBHC, and to learn from others as they share their own stories.

Better late than never! Introducing Evelyn, one of our case management interns, who started this spring semester:

Hello! My name is Evelyn Lachermeier, I am currently a student at Minnesota State University, Mankato and a BSSW intern at the Rural Behavioral Health Clinic. I am enrolled in my final semester and plan to graduate with my Bachelor’s in Social Work in May 2026. I was recently accepted into the Master’s in Social Work Program here at MSU, Mankato, where I hope to continue my education through the Advanced Standing curriculum. Following my MSW, my professional goals include working in the realm of mental health counseling or advocacy and community outreach. I look forward to engaging with the community and acquiring new skills that are necessary for all social workers. The hands-on experience and application of skills I have learned throughout my classes will be an insightful experience I am ready to pursue.

Outside of the clinic and school setting, I enjoy crafts such as crocheting, journaling, and really any new skill I can learn! I also enjoy listening to music, spending time with friends and family, and traveling. I love my family’s two cats, Angel and Boopsie, and our dog Winnie.

Last Wednesday, the Rural Behavioral Health Clinic had the opportunity to present to the Regional Community of Practice (CoP) served by the South Central Service Co-op (SCSC). This presentation focused on the mental health impact social media has on youth and children. We provided evidence and statistics on the ever-growing presence of social media in our society, alongside resources for school counselors navigating this new technological world. Thank you to the SCSC for this great opportunity, as it was a great learning experience for everyone involved!

Introducing Kat! One of our clinical interns who also provides therapeutic services.

Hi, my name is Kat! I am a Mental Health Counselor Intern, currently in my last year in the Mental Health Counseling Master’s program at Minnesota State University Mankato. I received my Bachelor of Science majoring in Psychology and minoring in Family Consumer Science in December 2023. I grew up in rural areas in southern Minnesota during my childhood and most of my adult life. Providing a safe, empathetic, and non-judgmental environment for therapy is what I strive for. My special interests are couples and family, non-traditional relationships, and sexual therapy. My goal is to help provide mental health education for individuals and communities. I enjoy spending time with my kids and family, baking, trying new foods, and experiencing new things. I have a background in many areas and have enjoyed my life experiences, the good and bad. I feel that our life experiences do change us, but they do not define us. Only we can determine how these experiences can change our path.
