Your first physical therapy appointment will be an evaluation where our therapists get a history of the injury to see what is bothering the patient, ask them questions about what makes them feel better or worse and how their injury is affecting their daily life. After history is discussed and noted, we measure strength and motion and look at some functional movements and special tests to rule out other diagnoses.

Bridging is an exercise that can benefit low back, hip, and knee patients by targeting the glutes. There are several variations depending on the individual's strength ability. The base exercise is to start lying on your back on the table with knees bent and feet shoulder width apart. The patient will push his/her feet into the table, squeezing the buttock muscles pushing your buttock away from the table (a cue can be belt buckle to the ceiling). A progression can be to add marching. The patient will perform the bridging exercise and then lift on foot from the table at the height of the bridge, place back down and repeat on the other side. A final progression is a single leg bridge with the patient performing the bridge motion with only one foot on the table.

Foam rolling 101

What is it? Dense foam that comes in a variety of different densities and sizes.

Benefits? Can serve as a form of self massage technique, can be utilized to reduce perceived tightness, soreness, and lead to short term increases in range of motion.

When to do it? Foam rolling can have a place in many parts of a healthy lifestyle, but we recommend performing after a workout/physical activity, as a cool down technique!

Water is essential not just for optimal day-to-day function, but ultimately for survival too. To neglect hydration is to neglect your health.

Hydration is mainly important in exercise, where as much as 1-2 litres an hour can be lost through sweating and breathing. Naturally, this fluid needs replacing or you risk dehydration – severe cases of which can land you in the hospital, but even minor cases will cause you to tire and overheat quickly.

Not only does hydration replace fluid lost during exercise, it also fuels muscles and fends off cramps. Always make sure to stay hydrated during and after exercise for optimal performance.
