Sleep apnea syndrome is unfortunately associated with a VARIETY of health-related consequences and is sadly damaging the quality of life for Americans every day 😔

The cardiovascular effects of obstructive sleep apnea, for example, have been found to be very significant, affect morbidity and mortality ❤️

However, more subtle but equally important, effects on the individual's overall enjoyment and happiness with life have been investigated as well. Although you may not know you have sleep apnea — since you’re sleeping or nearly sleeping when it happens — there are some clues that you should watch for:

🚨Sleepiness - Waking up feeling tired no matter how much sleep you’ve had, feeling sleepy during the day and dozing off behind the wheel while driving.

🚨Snoring - Very loud snoring that wakes up your bed partner.

🚨Gasping and choking - Waking up feeling short of breath, gasping for air or with the sensation that you’re choking.

🚨Feeling bad when you wake up - Morning headaches, dry throat and mouth, and a severely sore throat in the morning.

🚨Difficulty sleeping - Waking up frequently, feeling restless at night and insomnia. This is especially a presenting symptom in women.

🚨Cognitive and mood changes -Memory problems, anxiety, depression and loss of interest in s*x.

Hot days and workouts are not the only things that trigger the drive to cool us down. Shockingly, obstructive sleep apnea has been shown to be a key contributor that can trigger the production of excess sweat, particularly during sleep.

The science behind sleep apnea is pretty simple. Since sleep apnea restricts breathing, the body is then forced to work harder to utilize the limited amount of oxygen available😨

If you have sleep apnea, you may feel a sore or scratchy throat in the morning when you wake up, because snoring irritates the throat. Snoring is a common trait of sleep apnea sufferers, and it may not be obvious to you while you sleep. However, it may be harder to ignore a sore, scratchy throat as well as hoarseness when you speak. Earlier studies used to note that men were nine times as likely to have sleep apnea as women. Today we know that sleep apnea in women is common, and the gap between men and women is nowhere near that large.

Now research shows that men may be only 2 or 3 times as likely to experience sleep apnea🚨

OBESITY 🍔 Firstly, we all need to keep in mind that sleep apnea doesn’t discriminate. Children can have sleep apnea, old folks can have sleep apnea, skinny people can have it, obese people can have it and everything in between☝🏼

People who ARE obese though, are unfortunately more likely to suffer from the struggles of sleep apnea 😴

Sleep apnea is believed to affect 25% of the adult population and as high as 45% of individuals with obesity. Obesity is a major risk factor for the development and progression of OSA, and it is the only truly reversible risk factor.

If you know someone who is obese, you should speak to them about the possibility of them suffering from sleep apnea. Because if they in fact DO have undiagnosed sleep apnea, it could have major repercussions if left untreated🚨

SNACK ATTACK 🚨Most people associate late night snacking with being unhealthy. Although there is some truth to this, late night snacking can actually be really beneficial if done properly ✅

For optimal sleep, you need to be not too hungry and not too full before bed. To find the sweet spot, we suggest that you eat a 200-300 calorie healthy snack to balance your cravings. Preferably you want to consume a snack that is around 70% carbohydrates too👍🏼

Snacks such as fruit, oatmeal, nuts and yogurt are great options 🍉🍌🍎 Give this snacking strategy a try and we promise you will feel the difference the next morning👍🏼
