Foot Health Is Fundamental for Overall Health and Happiness!

Did you know that the average moderately active human will take more than 200 million steps and walk more than 110,000 miles in a lifetime?

That’s enough to take you around the planet more than four times—or about halfway to the moon. It takes the average American more than eight years to put that many miles on their car.

And that’s just an average. If you play sports or like to walk or run regularly for exercise or just for pleasure, your numbers could be significantly higher.

Your feet have to carry you all that way—and when they’re feeling good, they do that job pretty thanklessly. When they aren’t feeling good, though? We see these patients every single day.

They’re coming to see us because they can barely go five or ten minutes at a time before aching feet force them to rest. They can barely get through their workdays. More than that, they had to back out of hiking or hunting trips, or taking the kids or grandkids to the zoo, or playing their favorite sport, or going on their dream vacation—all because they knew their feet would let them down.

Foot pain, in short, makes your whole world smaller. It drastically reduces the amount of activities you can comfortably perform. It takes you away from so many of the things that you used to love.

We don’t have to explain what this means for your personal happiness!

But it goes deeper than that, too. Because of course, in order to stay healthy, humans need to be active. They need to exercise. How much exercise are you going to be getting if your feet are in constant pain?

If you’re like the vast majority of our patients, the answer is “not much.” And so you lose fitness and gain weight. You find it harder to stay steady on your feet. You increase your risk of developing chronic diseases, or suffering an accidental fall or injury.

The main point - feet are at the foundation of nearly everything you do. If they don’t work, you don’t work.

April is National Foot Health Awareness Month and a reminder that we should take due care of our feet!

Did you know that approximately 20% of Americans experience problems with at least one foot each year? Despite feet being an integral part of our body, foot pain, soreness, and ulcers are some of the last things to be referred to a physician. The American Podiatric Medical Association (A.P.M.A.) aims to change this and since its inception in 1912, it has been dedicated to raising awareness about the various aspects of foot health, with a sharp focus on how we can ensure maximum support for our sensitive feet.

Understanding the value of healthy feet is essential. It’s important to check them regularly for abnormalities such as sores, cuts, or infections. This April, pledge to keep your feet happy and healthy as part of your daily routine. After inspection, it is recommended that you wash your feet with warm water. At the end of a long day, it is a good idea to wash your legs and apply fast-absorbing lotion on the top and undersides of your feet before you climb into bed. Other advice includes regular nail trimming, wearing socks with shoes, and avoiding wearing high heels for longer than four hours at a stretch.

Schedule an appointment today with one of our experienced podiatrists at Ohio Foot and Ankle Specialists. We are the largest network of podiatrists in the state of Ohio with locations near you. Call today at 614-239-9444 and make your foot health a priority!

❤️February is Heart Health Month❤️
Developing habits with good nutrition, exercise and regular health care visits can benefit you throughout life. Start making basic lifestyle changes to reduce your risk of heart disease and subsequent issues. These strategies benefit other areas of your life as well, so you're doing your entire body a favor by focusing on heart health.

Easy tips from the Mayo Clinic to improve your heart health:
▪Avoid to***co- If you currently smoke or use other to***co or v**e products, your health care team can help you to quit.
▪Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all. Limiting your intake to a maximum of one drink per day or abstaining from alcohol altogether is best.
▪Be active- Exercise/Take a brisk walk for 20-30 minutes a day, at least three days a week.
▪Maintain a healthy weight- Exercise regularly and lower portion sizes and calorie intake at meals to lose weight or maintain a healthy size.
▪Eat a nutritious diet- Healthy and fresh food choices lower your risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes, as well as make you feel better.
▪Control your risk factors- Get physical examinations or checkups at least yearly. Doing so will help you monitor health conditions and allow your provider to examine you for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. If you have these conditions, talk to your health care team about medicines and lifestyle changes to help you control them, which will lower your risk for heart disease.
