It's scorching hot out so of course we have a leaking hydrant and the water is off. The faucet with an orange handle in front of the office is working.

Today on the 81st anniversary of D-Day, we honor and thank
Robert Louis Schiska May 15, 1915 - January 20, 1991 for his service to his country.

Robert was a medic in World War II
He is pictured below next to a medic truck and also highlighted in the photo of a landing craft approaching Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was part of the 104th Medical Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division.

VETERAN HONOR GROUND

Once again people have turned to social media to voice their displeasure with our cemetery and spreading false information without contacting us first. Quite frankly I find this immature, inconsiderate, fear mongering behavior. So...

By request of the Richland County Veterans Service Office the flag holders have been removed from the Veterans Honor Ground. The Facebook post in questions calls them service medals. They are NOT service medals. They are merely flag holders. They do NOT have any personal military information regarding the veteran. They only say which conflict the veteran was in, or they are a plain US star to denote peacetime. This information is already on the veteran headstone. The post also suggest that our men are too lazy to w**d whack around them and that we probably just threw them all away. Both statements are idiotic. The flag holders are government property and in our service building to be reused. So here are the reasons that the flag holders were removed.

~ flag holders will no longer be handed out for veterans hill and to make the hill uniform in look, the flag holders were removed

~ when mowing veterans hill the flag holders over time move and cause the ground to shift and headstones tilt and become uneven

~ Veterans Honor Ground was set up to resemble Arlington National Cemetery and Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. These cemeteries do not have flag holders. (photos below were from Arlington and Ohio Memorial Day flag placement in 2024)

Thank you for listening and thank you to the many people who contacted us today about the flag holders are were polite and understanding.

In related news 😁 The next veteran projects this year are the retaining wall on both sides of the new Veterans Honor Wall, making the grade at the top not so steep and then straightening and leveling the headstones. Also, we haven't received word of any veteran who did not get a flag and out of thousands of veterans that would be pretty remarkable. Don't forget we have extras in the office if you find someone was missed.
