Ticks are more than just a nuisance — they can carry serious diseases that affect both people and pets. Diseases like Lyme disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, can be transmitted through a single tick bite. The best way to prevent these diseases is to prevent tick bites. Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter. Check for ticks on you and your pet before heading inside. Find more tips at richlandhealth.org/environmental-health/ticks/

As the weather starts to change to warm, sunny days, it is important to remember that a parked car can become deadly in minutes — even with the windows cracked. Pets can’t cool themselves like humans do, and temperatures inside a vehicle can rise dangerously fast, leading to heatstroke, brain damage, or worse. Leave them safely at home when running errands on hot days.

Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter and walk in the center of the trail. Wear long pants, long sleeves, and long socks.
