Here's a general timeline of what will happen when your teen comes to Center for Oral & Dental Implant Surgery for a wisdom tooth consultation. Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Even if your teen's wisdom teeth aren't painful, you should still come see us around this age to make sure they don't need to be removed!

Oral surgeons like Dr. Sheppard are specially trained in administering various types of anesthesia and sedation, ensuring patient safety and comfort during procedures that may be too complex or uncomfortable for a general dentist to manage. Titanium is the material of choice for dental implants because it is highly biocompatible, meaning the body readily accepts it, and bone cells can attach directly to it. The dental implant fuses with the jawbone through a biological process called osseointegration. After our team surgically places the titanium implant post into your jawbone, your body begins a series of healing and integration steps. As the healing progresses, the jawbone fully integrates with the implant’s surface, creating a stable, permanent bond. This fusion allows the implant to function like a natural tooth root, supporting chewing and biting forces without loosening. Learn more about dental implants: www.centerfororalsurgery.com

When wisdom teeth are impacted, they don’t have enough room to grow in properly. Instead, they may stay trapped under the gums, come in at an angle, or only partially erupt, which puts pressure on nearby teeth and increases the risk of pain, infection, and long-term damage.

The tricky part? Impacted wisdom teeth don’t always cause symptoms right away. That’s why early evaluation at Center for Oral & Dental Implant Surgery is key.

What would happen if Dr. Sheppard recommended a bone graft before dental implant surgery, but you didn't get one? If a bone graft is skipped when needed, the implant may not integrate properly, leading to instability, pain, or even implant failure. Bone grafting is a common and important preparatory step for many patients seeking dental implants. If a bone graft is recommended to you, you're in good hands with our team at Center for Oral & Dental Implant Surgery. Set up your appointment: 817-477-0922
