Words matter — especially when we talk about communication.

At Glow ’n’ Grow Therapy, we often use the term “nonspeaking” instead of “nonverbal.”

“Nonverbal” can unintentionally suggest that someone doesn’t communicate at all, when in reality many individuals communicate in rich and meaningful ways through AAC devices, gestures, sign, facial expressions, typing, and more.

The term “nonspeaking” simply means a person may not use spoken words, but it still honors the fact that they have thoughts, ideas, preferences, and a voice — even if that voice looks different.

Everyone deserves access to communication and to be presumed competent 🤍
