What's YOUR Conflict Management Style?
From the diagram below, we all fit in somewhere in dealing with conflict, whether more assertive or cooperative styles or a possible mixture of both. Note that understanding your own style as well as recognizing others can give you valuable insights in managing conflict. When both you and the other party are high in the assertive scale, you enter the competing mode in which each expresses 'it's my way or the highway'. When both are high in the cooperative scale, you enter the accommodating mode in which each is ready to give in to the other's wishes. Neither of these scenarios will have a positive or effective outcome. Now if both parties are low on either of the two scales, you have impasse, avoiding any action whatsoever and accomplishing nothing. So now, what if both parties have styles that are a mixture of both scales? Well, as the diagram shows, by choosing to look at both sides of the conflict and COLLABORATE, the parties have an opportunity to compromise with a resolution both can live with.
