If you notice it says voluntary, but the reality is- it's not voluntary in order to qualify as a professional business and get a business license in any established city, it is required to hold the highest standard of training for massage therapy. There are only 2 schools in the area who teach by CAMTC Standard, the other is a post-secondary school that teaches massage classes on a basic high school level understanding.

1100 hours later (1.5 year) due to lack of research and misguided information, we got our official certification in December of 2023

The point here, is if your massage therapist seems to only have 1 massage option they ever offer, one kind of pressure or they don't understand pain management or the placement of your muscles or at minimum how to manipulate them... I recommend checking to here to see if your massage therapist is currently or has ever been registered appropriately.

California itself does not require any licensing structure or standard of education, which causes much confusion both for new therapists as well and clients.
Clients assume, we are trained to the utmost standard, but sometimes, some massage therapists are no better prepared than your 16-year-old kids who read a book from the library on how to massage
Generally, you can determine who is trained appropriately based on a couple questions.
*Do you provide massages for relax only or for pain management or therapeutic sessions? (🚩- if relaxation only)
*How well do they know Anatomy and Kinesiology? (🚩- if they tell you they don't know or remember much)
*How often do they sanitize their tools or their towel warmer? (🚩- if they get suspicious or tell you anything other than after every use)
Bonus Questions:
Ask them where the Popliteal muscle is.
Ask them how to determine where sciatic pain is originating from. Ask them what S.I.T.S stands for.

ANSWERS:
**Popliteal is the muscle in the back of the knee, most sensitive**
**Dermatomes are a map of the nerve pathways, that shows where pain is felt and how to alleviate it**
**SITS are your Rotator cuff muscles**
Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres and Subscapularis
