Have you heard the joke about stress?

That’s because stress is no joke!!

We are living in uncertain times.
For many these are times like we have never experienced before.
For most of us the result is added stress, and more specifically, chronic stress.
Stress wreaks havoc on our bodies.
It impacts our health and wellness physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
We cannot be healthy and well living in a state of chronic stress.
It is important to “be intentional” to do those things that help to bring us out of a state of stress into a state of peace, calm, rest and relaxation.
For many this includes relief from the stress brought on by anxiety, fear and depression.

There are many simple things we can do to relieve and combat stress.
Here are a few ideas:
•Exercise
•Listen to uplifting music
•Dance
•Enjoy positive community
•Get outside and enjoy

Fear puts you in a negative state and literally makes you more susceptible to illness and disease.

The best offense is a good defense.

With the concern over the corona virus I would like to suggest doing things that will strengthen your immune system.
This is the best way to protect against any sickness or disease and to help you get better quicker if you do come down with anything.

Lots of good water, whole fruits and veggies.
Cut out the refined sugars and processed foods.

Vitamin C is great for preventing and helping the healing process, if you do get sick.

Lemons and even honey are great tools to boost and strengthen the immune system, as well as speeding up the healing process.
These 2 work great together, if you have a cough or sore throat.

Oscillococcinum, a homeopathic remedy found in health food stores, as well as many main stream stores, is a great preventive measure, as well as helping to manage and shorten symptoms, if you do get sick.

Sleep, exercise and a positive mental outlook are necessary as well to keep you well and to keep your immune system strong!

Don’t let fear drive you.

Gut Health

Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut.”

If this is true then caring for and nourishing our gut is one of the most important things we can do for overall health and wellness!

We looked at the gut microbiome and cell mitochondria and the important role these play in our health and wellness in a previous post!

We learned that our gut microbiome impacts our cell mitochondria, impacting our health and wellness!
If our gut microbiome is healthy then our cells will be positively impacted!

We need to nourish our gut microbiome to have a healthy gut and in turn have healthy cells, resulting in a healthy you!

Probiotics and Prebiotics are essential for a healthy gut!

What does this mean?
What are probiotics and prebiotics?

Probiotics are foods that replace and replenish the good bacteria in our gut microbiome.
The good bacteria of our gut, necessary for health and wellness, need to be continually replenished and replaced due to things that occur naturally and unnaturally associated with one’s lifestyle and habits.

Fermented foods are the best way to replenish and replace our gut microbiome!
These foods are rich in good bacteria for our gut microbiome.
Similar to planting seeds in a garden!
Good fermented foods are:
•Yogurt •Kefir
•Kombucha •Fermented veggies
•Sauerkraut •Ages cheeses
•Kimchi •Honey •Apple Cider •Miso
Vinegar

Prebiotics are foods for the good bacteria that we get from probiotics.

These are nutrient rich foods that are high in fiber that the bacteria break down and use as their food source.

Know your “Why”

Why do you need to know your “Why”?

Your “Why” is your purpose. It is what you are passionate about. It is what gives your life meaning and direction. It gives you the “umph” you need to push through and persevere when you just don’t feel like it. Your “Why” gets you to you goals and helps to fulfill your dreams!

An example of a “Why” comes from my daughter Amy, “ I want to be strong and healthy for myself, my husband, my children, and my family, not just for today, but as I get old. I don’t want to be limited in my joy in life and what I can or can’t do because of a negative physical state.”

So get somewhere quiet, give yourself some time and figure out your “Why”. Write it down somewhere so you can be reminded of it, especially on those difficult days when you don’t feel motivated!
Step by step you will move forward into your destiny!

What do the gut and bacteria have to do with health and wellness?

What do gut and cells have to do with health and wellness?

Well pretty much everything!

In fact gut and cell health are the 2 most important areas of our bodies, physically, that impact health and wellness.

Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut.”

A compromised or unhealthy gut will result in unhealthy cells or more precisely an unhealthy “microbiome” which results in unhealthy “mitochondria.”
What in the world does that mean?!

The gut microbiome is an ecosystem living within our intestinal tract.
It is made up of bacteria necessary for health and wellness...

The cell mitochondria are the cells power houses or energy source...

There is an interconnectedness and communication that goes on between the microbiome of the gut and the mitochondria of the cells.
If one is compromised the other will be compromised, in turn, compromising our overall health and wellness!
There is increase in disease and illness, including autoimmune disorders due to unhealthy, undernourished and even destroyed gut microbiome, which in turn directly impacts our cells and their energy source, the mitochondria!

What damages our gut microbiome?
•Poor nutrition
•Medications & antibiotics
•Dehydration
•Poor sleep
•Lack of sunlight
•Chronic stress

How can we nourish our gut microbiome?

Applying the foundations and principals of Mama Heidi’s are necessary for healthy, strong gut microbiome!

The “Power 9” of health, wellness and longevity...

There are 5 areas in the world considered Blue Zones.
These are areas identified by Dan Buettner and National Geographic where people live to be 100 plus years, are in good health, happy and are physically and socially active!

Where are these zones?
•Ikaria, Greece
•Okanawa, Japan
•Sardinia, Italy
•Nicoya, Costa Rica
•Loma Linda, California

Why?
There were 9 things found in common and so called the
“Power 9”

1. Daily exercise and movement
2. Purpose
3. Daily times and routines where they down shift and de-stress
4. Stop eating when they are 80% full
5. Eat higher amounts of fruits, veggies, legumes, grains and smaller amounts of, or no meats
6. Drink moderate amounts of wine with family, friends and food (except for Seventh Day Adventists, who are a large population in Loma Linda and drink no alcohol)
7. Are part of a faith-based community
8. Have close, strong family connections
9. Have close friends and strong social networks

You may not live in one of these Blue Zones, but why not create a Blue Zone within your own family and community by incorporating the “Power 9” into your daily, healthy lifestyle!
