Sometimes a patient needs pink porcelain added to the gingiva for many reasons such as bone loss, recession, high gum line. Make sure you have a gingival shade guide, take multiple photos of the closest shade and photos of a darker and lighter shade.

🦷 Not every “custom shade” is about color—sometimes, it’s about seeing the full picture and asking the right questions.

I was asked to travel for a custom shade on a case that had started at another lab. The patient had Emax veneers with vtetracycline staining but that detail was never noted.

Even though the original lab saw the patient in person for a custom stain, they missed the fact that her existing restorations were clearly Emax. That should’ve prompted a call to the clinician to double-check material choice.

Instead, they made a layered zirconia restoration.
The case was handed to me with only a digital quadrant impression, no bite, no full arch, and no information about stump shade, ingots, or the patient’s existing work.

From photos alone, I could tell she didn’t need a shade match—she needed a lab that would slow down and care.

I spent nearly an hour with her, called the original lab, and asked for the ingot they used on her previous veneers. That opened the door to also get her stump shade and original ingot details crucial info we needed to get a seamless match. At the end of the day we did not get what we needed but because of our skills we were able to deliver a emax crown that matched and gave this Patient her confidence back!

When it comes to anterior work, details matter.
Material. Records. Communication. All of it.

🦷 Zirconia vs. PFM – What’s better?

In most cases, zirconia wins:
✔️ Higher strength & fracture resistance
✔️ No metal margins = better esthetics
✔️ Biocompatible & gentle on tissue
✔️ Ideal for both anterior & posterior
✔️ No risk of porcelain chipping like with PFM layering

But there are times when PFM still makes sense:
🔸 Very limited occlusal space
🔸 Long-span bridges with metal frameworks
🔸 Cases where the doctor needs to crimp margins or adjust metal for fit
🔸 When matching existing PFM restorations

Bottom line: Zirconia is the modern standard—but PFM still has a place in specialty situations.
