 Essential Oils have been in use for hair long before the invention of shampoos conditioners and other modern hair care products. The key to enhancing products with essential oils causing them to most effective, choosing the right carrier or base that is free from chemicals, preservatives, and fillers. When enhancing shampoos and conditioners, sulfate and fragrance free types will be the best option. Carriers or bases are oils, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions that carry essential oils into the hair and scalp. They are used to dilute essential oils and reduce the possibility of allergic reactions or skin irritations.Essential oil’s are very concentrated and can be very irritating to the scalp when used in undeluded form. Most essential oils should be use sparingly. A general guideline for enhancing products is five drops of anyone oil to 1 ounce of any carrier. For scalp concerns up to three different such oils can be used in one base.
For example if you were looking to enhance an 8 ounce bottle of sulfate free shampoo you want to add 40 drops of anyone essential oil. Remember, this is just a general guide. If you want or need to make the product more potent, increase essential oils in small increments to avoid allergic reactions.
There are many essential oils beneficial for hair health I will get you started with some of the more popular essential and carrier oils most beneficial for hair growth.
Rosemary is commonly used for treating dandruff and dry scalp by creating a soothing sensation. It stimulates hair follicles resulting in  stronger strands and enhancing hair growth. Rosemary is packed with antioxidants that help fight harmful molecules from exposure to pollution and toxins in the body. It promotes better blood flow to the scalp which helps produce faster hair growth, for that reason, you should use caution with clients with high blood pressure.
Chamomile he has a soothing effect and irritated and itchy scalp. Both conditions can lead to scalp problems, such as hair loss and dandruff. The Compounds in chamomile retract skin cells that become inflamed due to a chemical service or harsh environmental conditions. It’s perfect for treating scalp problems, such as scalp acne, eczema, and scaly scalp.
Ylang Ylang Is an essential oil that has been used for centuries to promote healthy hair growth. It restores the balance of oily scalp by helping the sebaceous glands resume normal healthy sebum production. It also promotes better blood flow, nourishing the hair follicle and boosting hair growth.
Peppermint essential oil helps in stimulating better blood flow to the hair roots. More blood flow means more nutrients and oxygen delivery that cells need in order to grow, multiply, and develop into a healthy hair shaft.
Tea Tree-oil has antibacterial, anti-viral, and antifungal properties that help keep the scalp free from infections. It helps in the functioning of sebaceous glands by removing lanolin and waxes from product buildup located close to the hair follicles. This encourages a more regulated flow of natural oils they help moisturize the scalp and hair shaft. As natural oils flow over the scalp and hair strands, dead cells, dirt, and grease are washed away. This is an effective and natural cleansing method that promotes healthy hair and scalp.
Myrrh Is a very good essential oil to use for dry hair and scalp which is prone to hair thinning and breakage. It aids in killing harmful bacteria that leads to under active sebaceous glands.
