Embodied Emotion Theory states that there is an interconnection between the mind and the body via the nervous system. Mental/emotional states can alter physical states, and physical states can alter mental/emotional states (both positive and negative).
When you have negative thoughts, beliefs, or emotions, there can be temporary physical reactions (such as contraction in tissues, changes in heart rate, blood pressure, nerve impulses, and breathing, and shifts in enzyme, hormone, and protein production and utilization). When we are not able to process these thoughts, beliefs, and emotions in a healthy and complete way, our bodies can stay 'stuck' in this altered physical state long-term (often causing chronic symptoms that are resistant to standard treatments). The only way to resolve these 'stuck' experiences is to work through them in a way that completes the processing and allows the body to return to it's original state.
Somatic mind-body healing is designed to do just that. First, the body is brought into a relaxed state so that the parasympathetic nervous system can enter into 'rest and repair' mode. Next, both the 'stuck' experiences and associated physical manifestations are discovered and processed through using guided questions, intuitive responses, and somatic bodywork techniques. This can bring the body out of its 'stuck' state and start to relieve any related symptoms.
