Safety is a concern for anyone but becomes increasingly more important as we age. Staying on top of safety precautions can help prevent falls, broken bones, or other injuries.

We’ve put together a short list of tips to help our Southview residents and others stay safer at home.

• Choose non-slip footwear and avoid walking on smooth surfaces in socks or slippers.
• Schedule regular vision and hearing exams.
• Maintain balance and core strength with regular exercise.
• Keep walkways clear of cords, shoes, or other tripping hazards.
• Add grab bars or railings to entryways, hallways, tubs, and showers.
• For extra support, consider using a cane or walker.

Emotional well-being is just as important as physical health. For seniors, emotional wellness is key to a happy and healthy life that can improve cognitive function, strengthen social bonds, and even boost physical health.

In honor of Emotional Wellness Month, here are a few tips to help support your emotional health, manage stress, and get the most out of life:

• Stay active. Exercise helps boost mood.
• Stay connected. Socialize with friends, family, and within your community.
• Stay curious. Challenge your mind with new ideas, activities, or hobbies.
• Stay balanced. Maintain a consistent routine that includes healthy meals and plenty of sleep.

Leave us a comment and let us know what you do to prioritize emotional wellness.

With the fall season bringing cooler temps, you may be hesitant to venture outside for daily activities. But there’s still plenty of time before winter arrives to get out (or stay in) and do the things you love to maintain overall wellness.

• Take a walk with friends outside to enjoy the fall colors and crisp, fresh air.
• On cold days, stay inside and do chair exercises, resistance bands, stretches, or light weightlifting.
• Join a book club or get together for coffee with friends to engage in social connections.

As always, each of our Southview Senior Communities offers a full calendar of events and activities for every interest and capability. We encourage residents to participate and meet new friends, discover hidden talents, and live their best lives.

October is National Apple Month! 🍎 Did you know this sweet and crunchy fruit is a superfood for seniors?

Apples are packed with health benefits, including fiber-rich content that aids in digestion and promotes heart health. They’re also rich in antioxidants that support cognitive health and can help lower the risk of chronic diseases.

No matter how you enjoy them—sliced, as applesauce, dipped in caramel, or baked into a pie—apples are a tasty way to boost overall well-being.

How do you prefer your apples? Leave us a comment and let us know.

Crisp air, changing leaves, and pumpkin spice everything. Happy first day of fall!

The beauty of this new season is a reminder to slow down and enjoy the abundance of color and vibrance that surrounds us. It’s also a cue to focus on releasing old habits or negative energy to make way for renewed thoughts, positive ideas, and supportive actions.

What’s your favorite thing about fall? Let us know in the comments.

Last month, the Arbor Lakes community hosted a Western-themed summer barbecue. Residents were encouraged to wear cowboy hats and other cowboy or cowgirl attire. Our menu offered all sorts of favorites, including burgers, brats, and hot dogs with all the fixings; potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, fresh fruit, and chips.

And for dessert, residents enjoyed cookies and bomb pops!

We all had a rootin’ tootin’ great time and went home with full bellies!

Our Arbor Lakes community celebrated the opening of the Minnesota State Fair with our own special Happy Hour event. We offered State Fair-style snacks, including cheese curds, mini corn dogs, mini donuts, lemonade, and beer.

Local musicians Diane & Lee provided live entertainment. With all the food and music, the atmosphere felt very much like being at the Great Minnesota Get-Together!

The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s affects about 6 percent of seniors 65 and older. During World Alzheimer’s Month, it’s important to stay informed about ways to better care for ourselves in the hopes of preventing this disease.

Alzheimer’s affects the thought, language, and memory portions of the brain. There is no cure and its cause is unknown, but it’s suggested that regular exercise, reducing blood pressure, and not smoking may reduce a person’s risk. To learn more, visit www.alz.org.

For National Night Out on August 5, the Arbor Lakes community celebrated with a PARTY! Residents enjoyed ice cream treats and live music from The Somewhat Dixieland Band while getting to know their neighbors and spending time with friends. Local first responders stopped by to talk with residents about safety, the community, their job duties, and more.

We had a great turnout and saw a whole lot of smiles!
