Every year, August 4 is celebrated as the U.S. Coast Guard Birthday, commemorating the military organization for its valor and discipline. Since 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard has kept the nation’s waterways safe, playing a critical role in national security.

U.S. Coast Guard is celebrating its 235th Birthday in 2025.

Our crew wears many hats. Today it was zookeeper. This guy made his way up by the office and was tenderly relocated by our crew to the wetlands on the northeast side of the cemetery. Such a Dapper Snapper!

A well maintained lawn mower will lengthen the life of your mower and provide a manicured cut to your grass. At least once a season, or depending on hours used, it is a good idea to:
*Sharpen blades (typically after every 10-15 hours of use)
*Use non oxygenated gas
*Change the oil
*Use a fuel additive for winter storage, such as Seafoam

Fun fact, here at the cemetery we sharpen our blades twice a week!!

It’s a good time to prune maple trees to avoid excess sap running from wounds. When pruned in winter or early spring, maples will gush sap out of the wounds that haven’t healed up yet, and it can be hard on them to lose that much water during drought years.

We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence (penned largely by Thomas Jefferson) and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.

We are in the office this week, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, through Thursday. The office will be closed Friday in honor of the Fourth of July. (Cemetery gates contiune to be open 8 am to 8 pm, seven days a week.)

The Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere happens between June 20 and June 22, and not only is it the longest day of the year, but it also signals the arrival of Summer. The solstice occurs when the Earth arrives at the point where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt in relation to the sun, which is why we have more hours of daylight during the Summer Solstice.

For many people, the Solstice signifies new beginnings and change. Throughout the centuries, this day has been celebrated with festivals, rituals, and midsummer celebrations.
