Turmeric essential oil is described as having a “warm, fresh, spicy, somewhat woody aroma with a crisp ginger and sweet-orange top note that is evocative of the freshly cut root.”  Thus, steam distilling turmeric root for its essential oil will yield, in highly concentrated form, several aromatic facets. The dominant compounds responsible for the earthy, yet piquant, aroma are the same ones that actively defend against free radical damage and inflammation and promote cell regeneration. As a result, turmeric essential oil has not only secured a place in perfumery but plays a vital role in skin and body care.
A few drops mixed into a facial mask, diluted into rose hip oil to fashion a serum; or added into a carrier oil or cream provide nourishing, anti-microbial, purifying, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging support. Potentially healing and restorative, its application attends wounds, acne, eczema, and hyperpigmentation. Skin may become more elastic and firm. For complaints involving joint inflammation, pain, or muscle soreness, add the essential oil to fractionated coconut oil or castor oil for a blend that absorbs easily and penetrates deeply. This blend’s benefits may be further enhanced by adding frankincense essential oil.
Turmeric essential oil may not jump to mind when deciding upon a recipe for perfume, but it plays a persuasive role in the creation of a fragrance. As a base note, it becomes the foundation for the middle and top notes of your design. It combines well with several different essential oils, including patchouli, sandalwood, atlas cedarwood, frankincense, pine, cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, cardamom, clary sage, ylang ylang, and lemon. Having many choices makes for enjoyable experimentation.
Inhaling turmeric essential oil impacts breath, thought, and spirit with a decongesting action. As an agent of purification, its vapors ease, clear, and cleanse those within us that are blocked, helping us to become focused and uplifted. Turmeric is a “golden spice,” its color associated with the sun.  Under its light, from our roots, we rise.
