6 Healthy Reasons to Have More Tea in Your Life

Fire up the kettle. It turns out all types pack a healthy dose of important nutrients and compounds. These are just six reasons why you should drink more tea.

1. Tea's packed with antioxidants
Tea outranks even the best vegetables in terms of antioxidant wallop. Remember that antioxidants protect against everything from cancer to stroke to heart disease.

Studies show that tea can boost insulin activity more than 15-fold. Almost all of that power comes from the naturally occurring antioxidant compound EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) in tea.

Research has found that all types of tea — green, black and oolong — have the ability to enhance insulin activity, which means lower blood sugar. All thanks to antioxidants.

2. Tea can help with diabetes
Drinking tea could benefit people already being treated for diabetes.

In a Taiwanese study of 20 people with type 2 diabetes, drinking a lot of oolong tea — about six 250-millilitre (one-cup) glasses a day was linked with a 29 percent drop in blood sugar.

Most of us won't want to drink that much, but even a serving or two should benefit you.

Some research suggests that tea may even speed up the body's metabolism and help control weight. By itself, it could help lower your risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

3. Tea can help you lose weight
One study found that green tea can increase the number of calories you burn in a day.

A study found that people who drank tea at least once a week for more than 10 years had almost 20 per cent lower body fat than people who seldom drank tea.

This is even after taking into account other lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise.

4. Chai can help with blood sugar
Want to make tea even better for your blood sugar? Brew a cup of chai, which combines tea with spices such as cinnamon.
Watch out for the chai lattes you get at coffee shops. They're usually made with premixed liquids that include milk and are generously sweetened.

Ask for a chai tea bag instead, and don't add anything except a small amount of sugar (if you must).

5. Tea can be made even healthier
If you're used to sweetening your tea, try black teas — not herbal teas — that taste better plain, such as ginger-peach or black mint tea.

A cup of tea has about half the caffeine of a cup of coffee.
Skip the milk. Adding milk may decrease this insulin-activating power by as much as 90 percent.

6. You can do more than drink it
While drinking a cup of hot tea is the obvious way to consume this food, tea is actually a more versatile plant than you might imagine.

Grind oolong tea leaves in a pepper mill and blend them with freshly ground white pepper to sprinkle on chicken or pork.
Tea also works wonders in a marinade; just add ground leaves to the mixture.

Add tea leaves to chicken broth or stock for a dish with an Asian nuance.

Tea is packed with all sorts of great nutrients that can help control blood sugar, increase your calorie burn and make diabetes a little easier. And since it comes in almost infinite flavors, you can stay healthy without your taste buds ever complaining.

Super-charge your diet with antioxidants
Linked to everything from better heart health to anti-aging, antioxidants have been all over the news in recent history. These compounds possess potent properties that can dramatically affect your health. Many supplement companies specialize in antioxidants, but learning how to add super-powered antioxidants to your diet by consuming the right commons foods and drinks is a much smarter and financially responsible option.

Eat more spices
The intense flavors in many spices are indicators that they're bursting with a powerful kind of antioxidant known as a flavonoid. An article published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry tested 26 common herbs and spices and found that almost all had high antioxidant activity. Some of the most powerful spices were cinnamon, cloves, oregano and rosemary, all of which are easy to add to a variety of foods and beverages. The common spice turmeric, a staple of Indian curries, is another spice with high antioxidant values that has been linked to many health benefits including anti-cancer properties.

Drink tea
Beverages made from the tea plant are also an easy way to add super-powered antioxidants to your diet on a daily basis. A study published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer found that drinking green tea causes a rapid rise in the amount of antioxidants in the human blood, which is associated with numerous beneficial health effects. Black tea, which is the toasted version of green tea, also has high antioxidant power but not as much as green tea itself, which is the plant in its raw state.

Eat fruit
The bright colors and intense flavors of natural fruits are also indicators of high antioxidant profiles. In fact, dark, sweet berries are often identified as being the most powerful source of antioxidants among all fruits. Eating blueberries, pomegranate and Saskatoon berries are all easy ways to add some very healthy antioxidants to your diet on a daily basis.

Spices, tea and fresh berries not only all add an incredible antioxidant boost to your daily diet, but they are relatively inexpensive and easy to find. If you're feeling fatigue, it may be more than just getting some sleep — it could also be your diet. Here are some ways you can naturally fight fatigue.

Energizing nutrition tips
Increase your iron level. If your diet is low in iron, your blood cells aren't able to carry their usual load of oxygen and your energy level plummets. Nosh on high-iron foods like meat, liver, whole grains and green leafy vegetables.

Iodine deficiency can also cause ongoing fatigue. You can counter it by eating ocean fish and sprinkling food with iodized table salt.

Buy wholegrain products. Whole grains break down slowly in your body, releasing sugars into your bloodstream evenly. That means your body gets a constant energy supply and your blood sugar levels won't fluctuate dramatically, causing fatigue.

Fresh vegetables, plus milk and milk products, contain a wide spectrum of vitamins and minerals crucial to well-being. They can boost your body's performance capacity, so include them in the menu plan every day.

Enjoy a tasty and healthy vitamin and mineral bombshell. Try this: spread a slice of wholegrain bread with cream cheese, and add avocado, alfalfa sprouts and chives.

Avoid coffee, cola and champagne. These drinks are often recommended as picker-uppers, but the boost doesn't last long and often has a boomerang effect.

Stay away from sweets such as chocolate and candy. They contain what are referred to as simple sugars, which quickly elevate blood sugar levels and performance capability — but they crash just as quickly, sending you into an energy slump.

Snack better. Instead of sweets or fast food, eat a container of yogurt or a piece of fresh fruit.

Good to know
In addition to a good night's sleep, a power nap may just be the tool you need to stay sharp throughout the day. Recent research found that sleeping for 30 minutes to an hour during the day can boost your brain power and increase your ability to learn new facts and skills. The theory is that having a nap during the day allows your brain to file away memories and new information. Aim to take your nap about eight hours after getting up in the morning so that it doesn't disrupt your nighttime sleep.

Can eating certain foods help increase collagen production?

Collagen is the main protein in the human body — it gives our connective tissue, muscles, bones, tendons, and skin the necessary structure and strength to hold everything together. Indeed, the word “collagen” is derived from the Greek word for “glue. There are at least 16 different types of collagen, with type I accounting for 90 percent of that found in the body. In addition to providing structure, collagen helps keep our skin firm and supple. Our body produces less collagen as we get older, declining by about one percent every year once you reach age 40. Sun damage, smoking, exposure to pollution, and even fluctuations in weight can further decrease collagen production, leading to wrinkles and thinner, sagging skin.

This is likely why an entire industry of collagen supplements, powders, and other products has sprung up in recent years, promising “anti-aging” benefits, particularly for skin. The supplements may work for some to a minor degree, although they’re unlikely to make a significant difference, and opinions among dermatologists seem mixed. (Prescription retinoids such as tretinoin address wrinkling by increasing the production of collagen).

Our bodies make procollagen — a precursor — from the amino acids glycine, lysine, and proline, a process aided by vitamin C and the mineral copper. Foods containing these specific micronutrients, including chicken, eggs, beans, and fruits and vegetables that contain high amounts of vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, berries, and bell peppers, may help boost collagen production.

Consuming more foods rich in collagen itself might also help, but the evidence is mixed. For example, bone broth — made by simmering animal bones in water to extract collagen — has grown in popularity; recent research suggests that it may not be a reliable source of this substance. Likewise, it may depend on the specific part of a protein that you consume: Although fish is noted to be a good source of marine-derived collagen, the eyes, scales, and head are richest in it — and considered unappetizing by many people.

It’s worth remembering that you can control some of the factors responsible for damaging collagen. In addition to smoking and sun damage, these include high consumption of sugar and other quick-digesting carbohydrates.
