The Unexpecteds
BY ANABEL GILLHAM

Christ in you, the hope of glory. – Colossians 1:27

My husband and I have been married almost 13 years. We never had children — perhaps that was a mistake. I don’t know. Maybe having a baby would have drawn us closer together.

It hasn’t been a good marriage, but we’ve not argued or been hateful to each other. We’ve both worked. He’s had his life; I’ve had mine. Oh, we’d go out for a meal every so often, it’s just that we didn’t seem to have time for each other; and we didn’t especially have anything in common.

Saturday was generally our only day together. (That’s a strange word — together.) I’d fix breakfast and then work around the house while he did different things. We still weren’t together I guess.

Last Saturday I was in the kitchen fixing breakfast. I had just looked at the clock — it was 9:30. When he came in I noticed that he wasn’t in his casual Saturday clothes, but was dressed to go out.

He said, “Laurie, I have filed for divorce and there’s nothing to discuss. I know this will upset you, so I’m leaving for the day.”

At 9:29 A.M., I had a husband — I was fixing his breakfast, remember? At 9:30 A.M., he was gone.

And an unexpected circumstance has come into Laurie’s life over which she has no control, a person she cannot control. Devastating! Oh, yes, she still has her job, sympathetic friends, and some material possessions. And, after all, she and her husband weren’t really that compatible. But you don’t casually wipe thirteen years off the blackboard. She’ll be starting a new lifestyle — a lonely, insecure, demanding, stressful, scary lifestyle.

What to do? She might choose to take the route of anger or self-pity, feel insecure, be plagued by thoughts of “what did I do wrong” and feel guilty, believe herself to be unlovely and undesirable, and struggle with every moment of the day, asking, “What can I do? Where can I go? What does life hold for me now?”

Or she might go to her therapist and — after cutting through all the big-sounding psychological phrases — be advised to do the same thing you used to do when your dog died — get a new puppy. “Build a new life. Find a group of people with similar experiences and attach yourself to certain ones who seem to fill the void. Indulge yourself. Stay busy.”

Practical steps, but not what Laurie needs.

You see, we “life out” certain identities, getting our security from them. Laurie’s identity just walked out the kitchen door. But then, she still has friends and an identity at her office, doesn’t she? Yes, but those identities are fragile, too, just like her identity as Mark’s wife — and they could be gone just as quickly.

The emotional stress won’t go away — we can’t control those slippery emotions. But we can certainly keep them from controlling us! How? By setting our minds on the truths God has given us for just such unexpected tragedies that come into our lives.

What are those truths? Well, Laurie has an identity that can never be taken away and will never walk away — it was given to her when Christ burst forth from that dismal tomb. She is a new creature in Christ Jesus. She is loved beyond her wildest expectations. She is altogether lovely and lovable. She is righteous. She will never, ever be alone. And she is forgiven.

And then, Laurie has a power living inside of her which cannot be defeated, which is undaunted by the world and its pain and which meets every moment with head held high, shoulders back and chin up. It’s the Holy Spirit and He’s ready to take over anytime she says, “After you, Friend.”

You have the very same set-up for the unexpecteds that come into your life uninvited — you just agree with these truths, accept them as your own, and walk in them, head held high, shoulders back, and chin up with a smile on your face. You see, the unexpected can never destroy you if you are secure in your new, true identity and have turned your every day over to the Power that lives inside of you, Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURES: THE UNEXPECTED

II Cor. 5:1
Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature –

I John 3:1
See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are –

Eph. 3: 17-19
So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpassed knowledge, that you may be filed up to all the fullness of God.

II Cor. 5:21
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

II Peter 1:4
For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature –

Deut. 31:8
And the Lord is the one who goes ahead of you’ He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear, or be dismayed.

Col. 2:13-14
And when you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

Depression is a pervasive shadow that darkens the souls of those who don't follow Jesus and those who do. A young man in Croatia was an up-and-coming rock ' n ' roll star many years ago. However, the fame and success had no power to slow down his growing depression from his meaningless existence. He eventually planned to end his life. Instead, he was introduced to Jesus and His love for him. Today, he's one of the most joyful, energetic people you will ever meet.

Yet, what about those who follow Jesus but are still weighed down with depression? For some, the depression is fleeting as circumstances and/or relationships improve. For others, depression is an unwanted companion that affects every area of life. It's not that these Christians don't love Jesus. They do. Yet, that doesn't seem to bring the relief they pray and hope for. In fact, many have attempted to stave off their depression with good things like reading the Bible, praying, praising God, or serving others. Yet they remain depressed.

Did you know that there are well-known godly people who have struggled with depression? Here are just a few: Elijah the Prophet, King David, the Apostle Paul, Martin Luther, William Cowper, writer of the hymn "There is a Fountain Filled with Blood," Charles Spurgeon, and many pastors and Bible teachers today

2 Corinthians 7:6 tells us that God comforts the depressed. So, what has He provided to help Christ-followers with depression? Here are a few of the important ones, but there may be others.

A change in a person's circumstances. Improved relationships. Better overall health through nutrition, exercise, etc. Medication for an illness such as low thyroid. Medication to help the brain function better. (Most Christians believe that if they just trusted God more, they wouldn't need medication to help their brain with depression. For a few, that may be true. Yet, for the many others, medication is God's provision for them just as insulin is his provision for those with Type 1 diabetes.)

The final one that God has often used is grace-based counseling, the kind we offer at Grace Life International. This can help people experience healed hearts and restored relationships. When people understand the lies they believe about themselves and the truth of what God thinks about them, this can bring great freedom from depression. One of our own staff members struggled with terrible depression for years and years. Yet, Jesus used her counseling with us to heal her. As a result, she is so full of joy that she has been helping other depressed women for the last eleven years.

Whether you are a man or a woman who is depressed, we are here for you. If you are not depressed but know someone who is, let them know about us by visiting https://infiniteagapeministries.org. Or call 830-220-5020

Lord is this You?

It is the Lord; let Him do what seems good to Him.I Samuel 3:18
Questions to mull around in my mind: Have I given myself to the Lord? Every facet of my life to Him? Have I told Him that I want His will in my life no matter what the cost? Do I yearn for Him to work in my life? Have I prayed, “Lord, keep Your hand heavy upon me. Don’t let me veer from the path You have for me? Is He capable of taking my life and working in it? Is He interested in what happens in my life? If my answer to all of those questions is “Yes, yes, yes,” then what is the answer for this question? Is there any reason why God would refuse to respond to my pleas?
The answer is an emphatic, “No.” Therefore, since I have given myself to Him and He has taken me, can I say with confidence, It is the Lord; let Him do what seems good to Him, no matter what comes?
Oh, dear Lord. I know that I don’t perform in all of the truth that You have shown me-very patiently taught me-but I sincerely long to walk in Your truths. You know my heart better than I do and You know the depth of sincerity in that statement. You are well aware of my “falling downs and my feeble getting ups” again. But how well I “perform” is not a prerequisite for Your taking over in my life, is it? The only prerequisite is the depth of my desire. Am I right, Lord?
Your word says that You began a good work and You will complete it. Your word says that You are working in my life both to will and to work for Your good pleasure. You say, “I know the plans that I have for you; plans for good and not for evil to give you a future and a hope.”
What am I to think but that You are involved in my every circumstance? Not that You cause them, but You take them-horrible messes that they sometimes are-and You use them and I find myself clinging to You, depending on You, and Your Spirit strengthening me.
What I must remember is that the people around me in my world may not be searching for You; they do not walk in Your ways for them and don’t really have the sincere desire to do that. These people may bring harm, grief, and cruel events into my life. Add to that the fact that I am a pilgrim, a stranger in a foreign land walking in enemy territory, surrounded by enemy troops, fair game to their taunts, to their temptations, and to their attacks.
How do I mesh the two, Lord? You in my life-working-but here I am, living in a sometimes Godless world where others, under the control of the evil one, are ever present, just waiting to trip me, deceive me, or throw stones. Oh, I see. This is where I must quickly step into the truth of Your meeting my difficulties for me-through me.
Lord, I know You haven’t stopped working when the circumstances of my life are bad. The truth is that adverse circumstances force me to search for You more intensely, to yearn more acutely for Your provisions for me to meet life here on planet earth.
You, Lord, can take any circumstance and use it-no matter how bad it is. You can make something awesome out of awfulness. So I must believe-I must trust that You will take my circumstances and use them for my good. I may have to dig through the muck and mire to find You, but then I can calmly say, “It is the Lord; let Him do what seems good to Him.”
I have told you these things so that IN ME you may have perfect peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer-take courage, be confident, certain, undaunted-for I have overcome the world. I have deprived it of power to harm, have conquered it [for you] Jn. 16:33 AMP.
Only IN HIM is this promise fulfilled.
So what must I do?
I must abide in Him.
How do I do that?
In my mind.
