We are delighted to support the journeys of our five 2024 scholars to higher education. Congratulations to Maeve McIlroy, Charlotte Howells, Griffen Collins, Matthew Callahan, and Angelina Nguyen.
Yearly, we award four to six students a one-time scholarship and one a four-year scholarship for excellence in academics, leadership, community service, and extracurricular activities. Meet our five outstanding awardees.
Maeve McIlroy
is the recipient of the Randolph and Barbara Goodwin Scholarship award and is headed to Brown University this Fall to study medicine on a pre-med or biology track. A member of the French and Math National Honor Societies, she has received numerous awards in math, physics, and French, including the Yale Book Award in 2023. Teachers have described her as "hardworking, determined, and highly organized," bringing these qualities to her academic and after-school pursuits in mentoring, coaching her peers, and participating in the complete facet of student life at the high school. As an intern with Stone and Compass, a global service learning program, she was promoted to an executive position in global relations, where she was responsible for connecting youth program participants to project leaders in different countries. A level 10 gymnast, she will continue her gymnastic career at Brown.
Charlotte Howells
is the recipient of the Donald Humphrey and Veterans Memorial scholarship, named after the famous Mr. Marblehead, Don Humphrey. The Donald Humphrey Award is given to students whose family members have served in the US military and embody Don's iconic spirit and grit. Not only is Charlotte the granddaughter of Daniel W. Howells, who served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, but all through her education, Charlotte demonstrates perseverance, diligence, and compassion, the values that Don had exhibited throughout his life. Despite learning difficulties, she is described as "hardworking, committed, self-advocate, and focused on her development." She has shown academic success as a High Honor Roll student and a member of the National Honor Society, with a consistently high GPA mark. She puts equal determination into her musical pursuits as a member of H-Treble Choir and Luminescence, the acapella group. Her musical director noted that Charlotte's "blossoming and maturing" has been remarkably consistent and resulted from her tenacity and willpower, which she will bring to her chosen profession as an early childhood educator. Charlotte will enter Stonehill College, majoring in early childhood education.
Matthew Callahan
Matthew Callahan will attend Amherst College in the fall to pursue an economics degree. He is passionate about football, an honor roll student, and a member of the National Honor Society. Matthew enjoys volunteering, and he works with children and the elderly. He credits playing football for the Marblehead Youth Football Program as an impetus for his love of the sport. At St. John's Prep and throughout high school, he played football and was voted team captain in his senior year. Being a student-athlete, he volunteered many hours in community service activities off the football field through campus ministry and service work. Matthew is the recipient of the 2024 Jack Grinold Chapter Scholar-Athlete Award, given to a select group of athletes in Massachusetts for their accomplishments both on and off the field.
Griffen Collins
Griffen Collins is the first Marblehead Rotary scholarship recipient for College Undergraduates. Entering his second year in Arts and Sciences at Tuft University, Griffen is pursuing a double major in Music and Cognitive Brain Science. Music has been a large part of Griffin's life. Continuing his solid musical tradition from Marblehead High School, he is an active member of Tuft's musical scenes: Beezebubs Acapella, Jazz Orchestra, and Chamber Music. His passion is finding the intersection of science and music to improve the lives of people suffering from physical ailments such as stroke and other cognitive impairments—ultimately, to be of service.
Angelina Nguyen
A well-rounded student who speaks four languages, Angelina excels in creative arts, business, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). In addition to being a consistent honor roll student and member of the National Honors Society, she founded three clubs at Marblehead High School, showing her affinity for subjects and projects she excels in: the Computer Science Club, Model United Nations, and Cookies for Life. Her passion projects include teaching programming and promoting STEM education among women, entering competition in robotics, creating a social app for high schoolers, podcasting school and world events, or baking cookies weekly to benefit the underrepresented women in the community. Angelina plans to attend the University of California at Berkeley, majoring in applied mathematics with a minor in electrical engineering.
