We are so very proud to have had such an amazing Individual supporting us! He has accomplished so much and is such an advocate for rural health and AHEC!
Continuing our celebration of leaders who embody the AHEC mission, we’re proud to recognize individuals whose leadership has shaped the healthcare workforce for generations.
Today, we’re spotlighting Byron Crouse, MD, a nominee for the 2025 Alumni/Advocate of the Year Award.
Dr. Crouse has dedicated more than four decades to advancing rural health, medical education, and workforce development across Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest.
He began his career as a family physician in rural Spooner before transitioning to academic medicine, where he co-founded the Minnesota Rural Health School and helped expand interdisciplinary training opportunities for future rural providers.
In 2001, he became the first assistant dean for rural and community health at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
For over 17 years, he led initiatives that strengthened the rural workforce pipeline, including the Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine, which has graduated more than 150 physicians, many of whom now practice in rural Wisconsin.
After retiring, he continued his leadership on the board of Northwest Wisconsin AHEC. His mentorship, vision, and commitment to rural training pathways reflect the lasting impact of AHEC programs across the region.
